restore or retire

Given that my 98 has been neglected and is somewhat beaten up (still only has 170k km and the engine runs well) should i dump some money into bringing it back or is it better to maybe take whatever $ i can get for it and buy a trailer for my car instead?

That would depend on what your version of "somewhat beaten up" means.

If we are talking about a lot of body work and paint plus mechanical I would probably sell it. I don't do body work and paint and it is stupid expensive here in Calgary.

The best thing to do is to find out what all it needs and decide if it is worth it to you to do that work.

Unless there is some kind of sentimental value attached to the truck, it probably doesn't make sense to put much money into improving the aesthetics of the vehicle beyond taking the time to give it a good detailing inside and out to achieve a "do the best you can with what you've got" kind of thing. However, I would have no problem dumping at least a little bit of money into the engine and drivetrain to make sure it's mechanically reliable.

As the owner of a '97 Ford Ranger that I purchased new and still own to this day, I can't tell you how many times I've enjoyed having this vehicle around as a "basic runner work truck" for trips to Lowe's or general errand running around town. It would surprise you how many miles and how much wear-and-tear you can keep off your better vehicles over the course of a year by having a truck like this around.

Plus, given the age of the truck, all you need to carry is basic liability insurance so it's not as if it should cost you a ton of money to license and insure it every year. I suspect it would have more value to you this way over the long term than simply dumping it for a trailer in the here-and-now.....

Take care of it mechanically, and when the body rots off send it to the boneyard. All the body work in the world is throwing money away if it's started to rot.

Bear in mind that the book value is under $ 4k, should you want to sell it in the future.

A trailer for your car? That right there tells me that you should just keep the truck. I'm with glc on this one...
