I think the Garter has a reddish or orange-ish tongue, and I think the Dekay's (brown) has a black tongue. I think.

How long is the snake?

Yeah, I was thinking some variety of garter snake at first, but IMO Dewser nailed it and it's the DeKay's brown snake.

I'd freak out if I came across that thing. Then again, any snake in general freaks me out.

My wife is like that. She HATES it when I find one and 'surprise' her with it!

Last Thursday out on the farm, one of the nephews found a chicken snake that was over 6' long. He grabbed it and was freaking out some of the group that was there, then let it go behind the barn. That thing was huge.

I'm a little late here...Dewser is correct. I caught one of those in Alpena when I was maybe 10 or so. No one knew what it was so we went to the library and looked at all sorts of books until we found it. I find snakes all over the place, but have never seen another one of those. Very cool find, and good call Dewser!
