Computer Hardware Help

I have Win7, 64-bit with 4GB (2x 2GB) DDR3 SDRAM. I bought another 2GB stick of 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM today but when I install it, I get one long, continuous beep from my mobo. I take it out, and I get a normal startup. I checked Gateway's website, no BIOS updates for my model, but my BIOS is from 2009. Any suggestions?

Hey, I am no genius, but I was given a lead by one of our own on a great site. GLC is a mod on http://forum.pcmech.com/

Great info there!

It fits alright ? Only time I got that is when the memory wasn't any good. Try cleaning it w/alcohol, blow out the slot.

It may not be recognizing it as well. Strange tho, have had very few memory problems. Unless you zap it. Then it's toast.

You shouldn't have to reset or update the BIO's, it should update on it's own. Glc would probably know more.

It fits fine. I have everything matched, voltage 1.5v, 1333MHz speed, 240-pin, etc, etc.

The only markings I see on my MoBo is "Greyhound"

I'm no expert, but just to clarify, you are adding a 3rd stick to your two existing sticks, and you have four slots total, right?

Maybe it has somethign to do with adding a single stick instead of adding a pair of sticks.

Which slots is your existing memory in, and what slot are you adding the new memory into?

This is true some MOBOs don't like to run unless the right slots are filled I would suggest to try and see if you can boot with just the new stick of Ram. Also try booting with one stick of the OEM and new RAM if still no boot most likely a bad stick of Ram
Good luck
P.S also open up your start menu and in the run box type dxdiag and it will give you your system specs

I switched my OEM sticks and the new one in all sorts of configs as far as the slots go. It boots no matter which slot the OEMs are in, but as soon as I put the new one in- no go. I'm calling this a DOA and going to return it to NewEgg. A couple of reviews are on there from a few people complaining of DOA sticks too.

They'll take care of yuh, you should receive a new stick pretty quick.

I'm getting a $25 mail-in rebate from my video card, and a pair of 2x 2GB sticks is about $25 so in my eyes its free to me. I just cross-posted to glc's neato website, but incase I get an answer here quicker: Is there a difference between PC3 10600 with a CAS of 9 versus PC3 8500 with a CAS of 7?

Answered in my forum, but posted here too - yes, there's a difference, and you need to match what you have for best results.

voltage 1.5v, 1333MHz speed,
That's one of the compatible kits at crucial.com, $29.99 for a 2x2.

This may help

PCX YYYYY CAS Z

X=ddr version
Y=memory bus speed
Z=memory latency

The lower the latency, the higher end the memory, but faster bus speed will usually equal faster memory. In those specific examples, the 10600 cas 9 is much faster.

The the op, some computers, especially oem (dell / hp / gateway / etc) usually want matching low voltage, lower speed memory. Also memory slots need to be populated in order (the mobo should be marked).

Try to boot the computer with only the new stick of memory. If it boots, the memory is good with ur computer and is not compatable with your existing memory. Ill bet it wont boot tho. That means either the stick is bad or not compatable.

It wont boot if it is in any slots, or any arrangement of the pre-existing memory sticks. I'm RMA-ing it and bought 2x 2GB sticks from another manufacturer for $19
