Anyone ever been to Jamaica? Looking for some tips and some "gotcha's"; you know, things to watch out for, places to stay away from, things not to do, etc? I don't think we'll be doing a lot away from the resort anyways, but just wanted to check and see.

Going to Sandals Montego Bay for FYI.

 

Someone at your resort should turn you on to a trustworthy driver for a day and you could tour the island, stopping at the local, safe hangouts that tourists aren't aware of.

That's what I did when I was there 15 years ago. Lots more fun than the resort, I thought. He took us places I would have never gone without him. Winston was his name. He charged us 60$us for a 12 hour day. Took us to bars, restaurants, t-shirt shops and the most important for me, cigar shops.

Make sure the driver is recommended by someone with authority at the resort, cuz some aren't trustworthy.

I did get hooked up with some locals that took me up to the mountains, smoked some ganja, sold me some hash and made me real nervous.

Today, if'n I wuz to take another trip, I'd go to Cuba before McDonalds, Taco Bell, KFC and Arby's make the scene.

 

Margarita ville in Montego is fun and about 15min cab ride from where your staying. Also look into the 4wheeler or dune buggy tour they are cool to. If you can go to ocho rios to duns river falls.

 

My mom is there right now. Not really that sketchy of a place.
