The official end of production for the North American Ford Ranger is announced: http://www.startribune.com/local/east/132015583.html
Such a shame. I think if they gave it a redesign to make it rival the Tacoma a little better and called it an F100 I think they would have a good seller. Not everyone can afford a $45k F150 Lariat or FX4. How cool would a $30k F100 Lariat or FX4 be?

i fixed it for you. daddy needs it for work m-f and the kids on weekends but doesnt want two cars.
I think that the Ranger is a pretty cool little truck. I might have ended up in one, had they done the powertrain upgrades they should have five years ago. I think that the powertrain choices are their biggest weakness.
It was inevitable. I guess you aren't going to be able to get a little truck from Ford anymore. You can still get a reasonabley priced, useful, efficient truck in a base F150. My truck sitckered at 30K, similar to what a similarly equipped Ranger would.
If gas prices go up from the highs of today, which we've been trained to think are "reasonable", small trucks may make a return to our market.

I bought a new Ranger in 1991 and it was a great truck. I wish Ford would compete with the Tacoma, but I guess they decided to throw in the towel as they did with the minivan market.
You probably won't see another Lightning unless gas gets back below $2.00/gallon and stays there. In other words, probably never. The good news is that you can pickup a used '99-04 Lightning pretty cheap these days.

I think the Ranger became useless lately, near me you could get an F-150 REALLY reasonable, so for a few grand more why not get a F-150 instead of a Ranger. Plus, I have yet to see a Ranger on the front line at any dealerships near me. I think they should keep the Ranger to compete with the Tacoma, Frontier (if they still make that truck?) and make it reasonably priced with a descent power train. If they did that, I bet a lot of people would buy those, even as fleet vehicle vs. F-150's just due to size alone. Just an opinion.
On a side note, those Lightnings suck gas like crazy. My friend had a stock one, and his mildly modded Corvette did better on gas.

Most of them did a days work on half the gas but time marches on I guess.......
