Of course the vette is better on gas, same hp and half the weight of a Lightning! That sucks about the Ranger, another market they are getting out of when they have a chance to dominate. The Tacoma?, Frontier?, that ugly Dakota (if they still make it)? and that weird Canyon thing from chev. Not much good choices for small trucks. The Ranger needs a face lift, not to be dropped. It's basically been forgotten, no real changes since 1993?

The 2010 sales figures, the Ranger only sold 55K units in North America.

It is a money loser for the company, so why keep it or pay to update it in hopes of getting production back over the break even unit count ?

The fusion broke a record for Ford, being the 1st car by Ford to sell more than 200K units since 2004.

Even the Escape sold 191K units in 2010 and the Edge was 118K units.
Econoline vans in the commerical segment sold over 100K units.

Ranger sales have been dropping for the past decade, so why keep it ?

Ford has been making solid business decisions since the new guy from Boeing came over. None of the GM type decisions where something is kept due to filling a line out. If the sales are not there, Ford is not going to damage the bottom line just to say they have a complete line.

Figure the profit margins on Rangers x 55K units. That is a pathetic inclusion to the overall company health.

Ford has the Escape and F-150 lines to choose from.
If someone really wants a small or midsize truck, let the % of those 55K unit sales go to GM or Chrysler.
See how well the business plans over there are working for them.

I would have to guess the Raptor sales are going to eclipse the Rangers sales in 2011.

I think they should keep the Ranger to compete with the Tacoma, Frontier (if they still make that truck?) and make it reasonably priced with a descent power train. If they did that, I bet a lot of people would buy those, even as fleet vehicle vs. F-150's just due to size alone. Just an opinion.

On a side note, those Lightnings suck gas like crazy. My friend had a stock one, and his mildly modded Corvette did better on gas.
That's because a Corvette weighs 1500 pounds less, and is a car.

I loved my 94 Ranger XLT 4x4 Extended cab 4.0L. It was a great truck. Only problem was you could not put child seats in the side facing jump seats it had so I traded it for an Explorer.

Can Ford be far behind with a T6 Ranger? Apparently price may be a factor.

The T6 looks pretty good to my eyes... Can't say much in support of the Canyon.

One could argue that the reason it isn't selling is because Ford hasn't done a true redesign and update to it for the past decade. Imagine if they put an Ecoboost I4 in a redesigned Ranger that got like 30mpg and still could haul light duty loads like the current one can? That would sell like hotcakes!!

Not everyone needs a $40K F150 Supercrew.

Ford is gambling that everyone else will discontinue small trucks too.

100% correct. Rangers are the same basic truck that they have built since 1993 with the same dash since 1995. I'm surprised Ford still sells 50,000 units with no re-design in almost 20 years.
