GM must have been pretty desperate.

Agreed, GM seems like a sinking ship. Just look at Volt sales

I imagine it was a very preliminary, exlporatory conversation and there was never really any chance of a merger.

GM Executives just needed to see if they had any options or leverage before they went hat in hand to the government.

It doesn't surprise me that Ford said no. Hell, Cadillac was Henry's company before the investors took it from him.

I think it would have been really interesting if GM and/or Chrysler had actually gone belly-up -- talk about a major restructuring of the US auto market as we know it.....
