Kids in RV's Question

Hey all,

I know alot of you on here have RV's. My parents are about to pick up a 2010 Coachman Class A 32-footer, i think, next Wednesday. My question is, if my parents and I wanted to take my 2 sons (ages 3 and 2 in December) on a trip, how do I secure the kids? Do the newer motorhomes have latch points for car seats or do you lock the car seat in with the seat belt? Or do laws about seat belts and car seats kind of fall to the wayside in an RV, as they do on buses and school buses? I searched google real quick and will continue to do so, but i figured you all would provide better answers than searching around. Thanks in advance.

I know my dad's 93 Bluebird had seatbelts for the couches and I would call the dealer that your parents are getting the coach from. They should be able to help you out and give you some pointers on what to do. I know it was a little dicey trying to make lunch going down the road at 73mph in my dad's when we brought it home from Florida a few years ago.

Illegal. All occupants in a RV are required to be properly belted in when it's in motion.

Nope.

Thanks guys. I remember when i was younger and my parents had an 1984 coachman, we would climb around all over the place while it was in motion. it had the sleeper over the cab (class c with a ford van front end) and we used to sit up there all the time when we were driving.

So glc, what you are saying is the boys will need to be in the car seats just like if they were in a passenger vehicle. Interesting. What do people do then when they take children on public buses?

The law says that in a RV, if your child is of the age and/or size where a car seat would be required in an automobile, the car seat must be installed in a forward-facing seat that's attached to the metal frame of the RV. Dinette seats are usually acceptable, as is the front passenger seat . The age and size limits do vary from state to state, as does the law that requires disabling the airbag if the child is in the front passenger seat.

Thanks glc. I found where it says what is required for PA. Up till the age of 8, the children will need to be in either their car seat or the booster seat, depending on age.

i still find it weird that you can get on a public transportation bus and not have to worry about seatbelts, let alone car seats and boosters. Maybe you are supposed to, but in the limited times i have seen kids on buses, none of them were in car seats or boosters. and seatbelts are non-existant on the buses last time i was on them.

thanks again guys.

Do what my parents did.. put a portable play pen in the back of our 1973 International Travel-all and let them play around completely unsequred!! Man, it's amazing all the thousands of miles we travelled as a kid never had an accident..
