Contractors say the darndest things :-)

So last Sunday (that's right Sunday in SC) this terrific contractor comes out to meet me for the first time. I have a job for him that I think is going to cost me 12 to 16 grand. I would like his company to do it. He doesn't know I've already got estimates.

So I ask for an estimate. First I'm impressed that he came out on Sunday and he does good work.

He takes measurements and states that he will call Monday with a quote.

Here it is Wednesday night. I haven't heard from him so I give him a call.

The phone rings, a man answers and I say this is so and so is this Mr. ******? He says: "what is this about"? Caught off guard, I have no words and I can merely mumble and grunt as I search for the words.

Finally he realizes that I am the guy he spoke to on Sunday.

It’s Just hilarious to me. Apparently he is working hard on my estimate. I love South Carolina.

I would worry about him remembering where you lived in order to do the job if you gave it to him. Might go to the wrong place and do the work and then bill you for it. Sorry to the contractors who are actually dependable but my experience with them has been enough to break a grown mans heart, or his mind, one or the other. And I NEVER go for cheap price, doesn't seem to make any difference. So many BAD experiences I've given up and do my own work now, beats paying them for it and then having to do it over myself when they're done.

That is kind of funny, but I wouldn't care what kind of quote he gives me he would not get the job. 1) He said he would get back with you Monday and here it is Wednesday and he is still working on the quote. I don't think I would trust him to get anything done on time. I was getting quotes for roof replacement and those who did not show up on time or failed to provide their quote within the time frame they quoted was immediately thrown in the trash can. I look at the quote process as their job interview. 2) "What's this about?" is not a response I'd expect from someone who is doing things correctly. Sounds like he is expecting a visit from someone like me.

Couldn't have said it better.

I hear ya. I just have the strangest feeling that there is something wrong here in South Carolina. Maybe it's my imagination. There isn't an architect to be found. I had one contractor that said he would meet me at 6 PM one day. I hurried home waited, waited and waited. He never showed and never called. Then he called about 24 hours later ready for me to start the job. I DON'T think so (my inside voice). I've got one guy that's been true to his word and never stood me up, I should give him my business.

You guys are right though. If you can't handle the small stuff how can you be trusted for the big stuff?

Thanks.
