What a great song. I listened to this on my father's records when I was growing up and he was in Vietnam.

I remember that song well, late 1965 or early 1966. Thank's for posting!

I enjoyed that song too, but I can't help but think the lyrics miss the mark somehow. It all seems to be about OUR guys dying (for what they believe, to help those oppressed, and so on). In the words of Gen George Patton, whom my Father talked to in France after getting ashore on D-Day, I thought the goal was to, "make the other guy die (for his country)".

Me too.

I remember when some recording studio sent me a demo tape of David Ball and asked what I thought of him. It's wierd, I wore that demo tape out.

You're welcome. My dad went in on D-Day +3, he was in the Army from 1940-45 when the war ended.

Thanks, tarajerame - I appreciated that one too. Though I was never "on the ground with the grunts" in that war, I like to think the firepower we put on the other guys made a difference when things were tight and we were called in.

For those of you who weren't there, this situation was known as a "TIC" (Troops In Contact), and we were scrambled out of Ben Hoa on many of these.

AND, thanks, Kris, for NOT calling it the "Congressional Medal of Honor". I want to throw things every time I hear that. It is simply, "The Medal of Honor", and in my mind, putting "United States" in front of it is OK. But "Congress" - NO!

I think it was Jack Bennie that said "You can't argue with a dead guy". At least I heard him say that at Mcdonalds one time

The lyric I remember most from that song went something like "One hundred men will test today / only three get the green beret." For some reason that always stuck with me.
