Weed-Grass Help me get rid of it

My side lawn, part of my back yard and part of my front lawn has a weed problem--crab grass I think. A variety of long green weed that looks like some kind of wild grass has invaded my lawn. I noticed that many lawns in my area have been affected. My subdivision is surrounded on all four sides by forest, swamp or meadow.

How can I get rid of this stuff? My mother says I should put down weed and feed now or sometime before fall and then again in spring time. My father says I should put it down in the spring because these weeds seem to pop up around the end of June. After Labor day I have to re-sod one portion of my back yard because the lawn was wore down and destroyed during another project. Should I treat the sod too? Now, when I install it or later in early fall? Will call chemlawn as a last resort.

Any help appreciated.

TonyM.

Your Mom is right. When your grass is well established and fed, the weeds cannot grow

Check with your local County extension office or even the Feed stores to find out what you need to do to the soil

Most "weed and feed" blends are effective only against broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, not crabgrass. It won't hurt though, and at least will help your "normal" grass grow better to hold off being overtaken by the crabgrass.

Crabgrass is an annual grass that dies each fall and comes up again from seeds the following spring. To my knowledge, the only way to knock it out is to apply a pre-emergence herbicide in the spring, before the crabgrass sprouts (it basically prevents all seeds from sprouting for a set amount of time, until it dissipates).

Note: pre-emergence herbicide aka "crabgrass preventer," available wherever you might buy lawn fertilizer and so on.

If u put down weed & feed make sure u buy the right one. There are 3 varieties , spring, summer & fall & follow the directions closely. Sometimes u have to do it when there will be no rain for a few days etc. Make sure u set yr spreader to the required setting.

I think you need to find out exactly what weed you are dealing with.

Around here, we have 'nut grass'. That stuff is nasty. You can't pull it out. It needs a special chemical. Crab grass pre-emergents and sprays and normal lawn weed and feed won't touch the nut grass.

Total brush killer on everything LOL. Seriously I want so bad to move to the desert where there are no leaves, grass to mow, etc. TIred of picking up branches, you name it. Sometimes sucks living with a forest around your house.

I use this spray application>>>http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/pr...temId=cat50064
I get alot of stray grasses due to the ponds and fields in the surrounding area.....it kills crab grass, pigeon grass, fox tail, water weeds and it doesn't harm my lawn which is kentucky blue grass......try it in a small area of your lawn first......

Careful what you wish for. Here in Zoniestan, I'm constantly battling tumbleweed, pigweed and spurge. And, a huge colony of ground squirrels that think our property is the place to be.

Here is a little article on nutgrass / nutsedge.

http://www.bestweedkiller.net/how-ca...mmer-any-good/

Once this stuff gets established it is a real bear. I've got a small patch in my yard that I've been trying to eradicate for years. That area is low and gets alot of sun, so it stays wet and hot.

Thought I had it under control two years ago, so did not treat it last summer. It came back this year with a vengeance. I waited too long to treat this summer, and now even the special weed killer is having a tough time knocking it back.

A day or two after you mow, this stuff will be sticking up higher than your other grass. It's not as dense as a patch of crabgrass. If anyone sees any signs of this stuff, get the speciality weed killer ASAP!

Good tips, if that doesn't work you can try tying a goat on the patches. That's what we've done with much success.

I can send you my 17HMR AND a goat. The goat will take care of your plant problem and the 17HMR can hit rodents at 200 yds.
