Help with my home A/C unit....

So I called my local HVAC company to do a quick inspection of my ac unit since it's been a while since its been serviced. He told me that the last company that did work on the unit put in too much refigerant. Now they're quoting me $315 to recover the refrigerant from the unit? Am I getting screwed here or does this sound about right? Thanks in advance. John

Have you noticed any change in the performance of the unit? I would call another company (if you can swing the cost) and see if they say the same thing. Don't tell them what the other company found. I can't recall off the top of my head what too much refrigerant would cause.

Well, I'm renting the house out now and the tenants are saying that the front of the house was cooling off as good as the back. I just did a $69 tune up just to make them happy, but of course it couldnt be that easy. I was actually thinking of doing your suggestion but didnt want to fork out another $70. I guess it would be better that $300 if the guy is wrong. Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, my parents just went through a huge hassel with their A/C in Florida. Had it charged then a week later it quit working. Same company came out and said it had a leak. Well, it held charge for 4 years before, and now you touch it and a week later its not working? They wanted $400.00 to fix it. They called another guy and it was fixed for $75. It's very unlikely that a leak can develop in less than a week unless the refrigerant lines get tweeked enough to open a hole.

Thats why I didn't want to call anyone in the first place. It's been fine for the last four years but now when I call them there's a $300 fix.
