The new Vette

This is an interesting article about the New Vette.

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/next-cor...turbo-v-8.html

Building a vette with a Mid Engine
Small High RPM V8. Is this going rice, or is it an improvement?

The article states in will be a higher RPM engine, but goes on to say it has a longer stroke. I think maybe that was miss stated. Also states it will have an all new ****pit. That's a good idea.
I would like to drive one just to see.

The article sounded like they want to compete with porsche, lambo, ferrari which as much as I like the vette I don't see it in the same class. At least they did mention it will also have an option of a more traditional V-8. The vette has always been king of the amercian muscle cars IMO and this is a step in the wrong direction.

Just luck at the success of the new mustang, camaro and challenger all of which are big horsepower, big engine and big sound! The way it should be!

The Vette isn't a muscle car, its a sports car, I know its kinda nit picky to point that out but it is a pet peeve of mine. The z06 is an amazing sports car, the only car that was as impressive to me as the Ford GT. I don't know about making all these changes to a classic, why not make a new car to compete with Farrari and and likes and leave the vet alone?

The article says an 80.5 mm bore, which is about 3.17 inches.

To get three liters out of an 8 cylinder with that bore, the stroke would be about 2.9 inches, or 91.5% the size of the bore.

The current base motor in the Vette has a stroke that is 89% of the bore (4.06" bore and 3.62" stroke).

So it's not technically a 'long stroke', but the stroke is SLIGHTLY more as a percentage of the bore size than the current base model V8.

And I would expect it to rev higher, as the 2.9" stroke would be about 0.72" shorter than current motor's 3.62" stroke.

Not sure how I feel about GM attempting to go head to head with Ferrari, Lambo, etc... IMO, that's a pretty small pool of buyers to fight over, and I question whether those buyers would ever be interested in a Chevy.

I HIGHLY doubt that this will happen. GM's GT1 cars basically tell GM what they would like in a race car.. And GM Builds a version of that for the street that can fit within the rulebook to use at a race. A Mid engine car would kill the corvette community.

Don't be surprised if it's a 3.2L engine making around the 420HP mark depending on where they top out at with the turbo. Redline is debated at 8500 and some engineers want to press it to 9500. Block will be light CGI technology.I would expect a limited warranty on the first years production...if it makes certification. They may have to employ exhaust coolers to get it compliant which is going to hamper performance.

It says right at the start of the article that they want to compete with Porsche, Lambo & Ferrari which just isn't gonna happen!!! Whatever they do to it the car will never be in that league!!! Lambo & Ferrari have been building supercars for years, the vette does not measure up. I am not saying they are bad cars its just if u mention supercars people generally think Italian. I also doubt that the build quality would be comprable.

Until the C5 they really were best when pointed in a straight line.

The ZR-1 proved more than a match for the Italians when it was introduced. While I see the Vette community going in a ruckus for this one, I knew they had to be offering the traditional big-block V8. But if they do that, do you think they would retain the mid-engine layout? If not, they are basically making two cars with the same name

very true
In order for it to be a muscle car in my mind it has to be a 2 or 4 door car with a large v8 and RWD. If its a 2 door car it must have a back seat.

Since it is to have a mid engine, I demand it has a Flux Capacitor(R).

I have read several articles saying it won't be mid-engine..too much engineering involved for this go-round..keep it the way it is..pure and simple..lightweight car with big power

Yup, chalk up another reporter as either stupid or bad a math. F1 cars are limited to 18,000 RPM. 18,000 is almost twice 10,000 that driver better stop short shifting or he is gonna lose the race!
