Looking for a good point-and-shoot digital camera..

Ok, been reading here and there.. looking for a point and shoot, 12-mp or there abouts, at least 5x zoom, something easy enough to put in a pocket. Want to spend under $200... I buddy who is in photography recommended a Fuji, not sure of what model.. I have had good luck with Canon and Nikon.. We had an Olympus that was nice, 'till my beautiful bride waded across the river in Bennett Springs one morning to free a Kingfisher that was caught in fishing line.. love being married to a biologist who loves nature!

I know this is suBjective, like exhausts, lol.. just looking for some ideas..

Thanks!

I'm partial to Canon.

This one isn't a shirtpocket camera, but the specs are excellent:

12x optical zoom. Optical zoom is ALWAYS better than digital zoom.

Oh yeah, those are the cameras we have at work actually! I evaluate hvac systems for energy efficiency and do a ton of field work. That camera does awesome work with low light. Took pics of a fan 20 feet in the air and could read the model number perfect!

Today you can buy smartphones that have excellent cameras and they will easily fit in a shirt pocket. I just bought a T-Mobile G2X that has an 8 megapixle camera and 5x zoom. Not too shabby!

Stick to Canon or Nikon. Good product and service.

Just find the one that you like the best for ergonomics.

I actually got a Fuji S5000 way back when, due to the recommendation from RockPick, where previous I had been Sony loyal with the digital cameras.

Since the S5000 I got a Z3 and a F100FS Fuji, and love all 3 of them. I still use the S5000 to this day.

The Z3 you can find refurbs for 65.00 on eBay and Amazon. The only thing is they use the xD memory card ( Olympus & Fuji started this format, but the total memory size had limitations unlike the std card used today ), so you might need to pick up a USB to xD adapter ( amazon has the 5 in 1 and the xD to USB specific for cheap ).

The Z37 I do not care for, the screen seems a bit grainy in low light to me, when compared to my S5000, Z3 and F100FS, but that is just my opinion.

Worth taking a look for the Z3, dirt cheap, and nice pocket size camera.
It is a 5mp camera, but has a 3x optical zoom ( Non-extending refractive optical zoom ) and is 36 - 108mm equiv & F3.5 - 4.2.

For 65.00 you would not have to be concerned about it taking a swim.

I have a Sony Cybershot which has a Carl Ziss lens. It takes real nice pics (I have posted some in the photograpy forum). I also have a 14mp Sony which is brand new so I have not taken any pic's with it yet. I like the Sony because it means I can use the same memory stick in each camera. Get a camera that has a rechargable battery, digital cameras are hard on batteries so otherwise u will be spending lots on duracells etc.

You can use rechargeable NiMH batteries in a camera that takes standard batteries, and 2 sets and charger will probably be cheaper than a spare proprietary battery.

Yea I've seen Agent47's photo's in that thread, they're very clear! I need to upgrade,- still using an older Cyber-shot 5.1 MP's w/3x. It's okay, but it doesn't compare to what I've been seeing.

I have a $200 samsung something or other. I like it. It doesn't take "professional" quality photos, but it does take good photos.
