Bought this a few weeks back...
I did the same thing with an 04 Grand Marquise almost 2 years ago. About the same mileage @ 58,000. The price was right and I did the maintenance on it since new, so that was helpful.
So far I've gotten 22 mpg at most. but I don't travel slow, usually @ 78 mph on the e-way. Good car.

Just bought a similar one for my son to drive to college. This one's a 1999 with 125,000 miles on it and it was in Florida until 2006, so no rust. Only paid $2,800 for it. This shot was after 7 hours of detailing the day before.
Most of my driving is main roads. Some interstate for a 30 mile run from time to time and all others are 45 and 55 mph stretches. I do very little in the way of city stop and go at all. And I don't have a lead foot anymore. So my two tanks so far are probably better than most would see I bet. Still I am rather happy with it. I can live with 20 average with as little driving I do now days. I probably do only about 4K a year now and another maybe 1000 miles split with the truck from time to time, its still better than the F150 is getting.

I do know it will fit as much as I was getting in the Taurus wagon though.
Just got back from a 240 mile almost all highway trip with the Grand Marquis.... results were exactly 24 MPG's.
I was a tad disappointed but then got to thinking that I had done no less than 70MPH to the half way mark (Speed limit is 65 through there) and then 75 the rest of the way (speed limit is 70 that stretch) and then on the return I was fighting a 45 mph crossing head wind too. I guess I should consider that good.
I got 20 mpg the last 3/4 of a tank I ran just making trips around the house. And that one was a worst case tank with it all being short trips.
So I have a good idea now of what to expect. If I kept it to 65mph I am pretty sure I could get 26mpg's and at worst I am going to get 20. So, not too bad really.
Did my first modification before I left. Picked up a single slot CD radio off eBay for $70 and popped it in. Lost the cassette radio it came with and off we go. Nice and easy fix.
