Need some help from the motorcycle people..
Ok, so I dropped off my 2001 Yamaha R6 at my mechanic, it's been running like crud. I find out I've got to purchase a new carb bank, 4 carbs @400$ each. Yeah, ummm no it'll be traded in on something else, before I spend that. I do hate to trade it, anybody know where I can get a new/used carb bank cheaper than $400 each??? Seriously, it's riding season and my two wheel thearapy is a requirement. Any help is definately appreciated.
Thanks everybody!!

Rhonda, just curious what the heck did you do to trash 4 carbs all at once?
Might want to get a second opinion on that one. Also have you tried any of the motorcycle bone yards?/e-bay? I bought a whole Honda CB650 for $100. IDK just a thought.

This does not sound like a bad deal to get yr carbs checked & serviced

1. Find someone else. I truly can't understand why your entire set needs replaced.. I have a '96 cbr500f3 with 20,000 miles... purrs like a kitten
2. Checked Ebay? You should be able to find a set.
3. Checked around in your town for people that fix used bikes? Goin rate for your carbs should be about 200.00 .. for all 4 used in great shape/.

If it has been setting all winter you most likely have gummed up carbs. Could try running carb cleaner through the gas, you might get lucky, just will take a while to clear up. Or you might have to remove them and clean them. I know it sounds scary but I am sure you are more than capable. Just do one at a time and you should be fine. I used to purchase oem stuff for my grizzly from this place. They were the cheapest I found and excellent customer service. w w w. m r c y c l e s. c o m Check them out.

4 new carbs ??? What the heck happened to them, they get acid dumped in them, or water poured over them every day while sitting out over winter ?
Those are the only things I can see wrong with a set of carbs that would make repalcing them the only option.
I have yet to see anyone need a new carb from using the bike ( I have seem guys trying to mod a flat side mikuni , and make a mess out of them ).
Have not checked Ron Ayers yet to see if the parts in a carb are more than 100.00 each ( so 400.00 for all 4 total ), but I cannot see the 3 jets, the o rings, and a new diaphragm & Slide costing 300.00 each.
An Ivan kit for the bike ( no diaphragms ) is less than 200.00 for the set of 4 to replace everything ( all 3 jets ).
I will say if the cab bowls are cracked on them, that might cause a replacement, Kawi gets ~ 150.00 each for the bowl alone, add in the parts, and you are talking 4@ ~300.00 plus labor to assy ( mount is the same for new and rebuild ).
I'd find another shop to have look at the carbs, and if they have the same answer, ask them why the carb body is not usable.
A good shop should be able to do a complete tear down and rebuild / sync of all 4 for ~ 450.00 total, depending on the parts needed and shop rate.
My GL 1500 ( I am still chicken to this day, to dig into the tupperware on that bike to that level ) was $592.00 to remove and clean the carbs and change to SS brake lines ( reconfig ) and flush the system at the local Honda dealer.

Ok, it's a long story, but the bike was like this when I bought it. The tool I bought it from was a idiot, I actually bought it from his wife, (she was very displeased with him, he was sulking on the couch.) He blew out the front fork seals, warped the front rotors & whatever he did to the carbs. But, it had never been down & had low miles. I paid 2k for it. Since I've bought it, it's been garage kept, winterized every winter & the carb clear. It runs, but it just does the nose dive when you twist the throttle. It's the equivalent of a Porsche with 3 sticky pirellis & one temporary 'donut' tire. It just doesn't do what it's capable of. I'd say my bad explination of what I was told I needed, a total carb. assembly. He said my needle valves are 'wallowed out' & the entire assembly is shot. I thought carb assembly was the same thing as a carb bank? I'll recheck the websites ya'll mentioned & ebay. As for my mechanic, he's worked on all 6 of my bikes. He's been a helicopter mechanic for 20 yrs for the Nat. guard. He's always been cheaper than anybody else around here. I am so so on dirt bikes, but street bikes I am completely dangerous! If I find the parts relatively cheap I'll keep it, if not I'll be shopping around for a new-er fuel injected bike. That Ron Ayers site has them for $354 each. I can work on cars and trucks no problem.
Thanks for the links & help everybody, I appreciate it. I had forgotten about most of these websites.

Update on the R6:
Well my mechanic has had my bike now for 3 weeks. He's replaced all my needle valves and the valve seats and it's still has 'gas blowby' issues. He's talking to so & so head tech at Yamaha to ferrit out the problem. I mean this guy knows his stuff, he's been working on bikes 20+ yrs. & is a chief helicopter mechanic at the Nat. guard. I have full faith in this guy. The only good thing about all this it's gonna be FREE!!! He said it has "pissed him off" so he's determined to fix it. He said it might just take a bit so he's not charging me any labour, just for the needle valves. I'm happy about not paying the $85 per hour labor fee. I wish he'd hurry though, I'm really ready to ride....now!

KC yeah I plan on giving him a great right up & he and his wife a nice dinner out. avfrog, I really think he's screwing me, he's losing too much money at this point. The that I bought the bike from must have done way more than what I remember him doing. I don't know. All I know is I'm ready to ride now, so it either gets fixed or traded in on a new Triumph 675 Daytona... I can't afford the latter no matter how bad I want it.
