Wanting an F150, please help!

I have been wanting this 2002 F150 V6 4.2L for about 3 months now. The guy said he would take my Ranger and $2000. I just turned 18 and have had the Ranger for about 6 months now. I have worked my *** off to get $2000 (I don't have a job but I start one on Thursday) and If it were up to me I would go down tomorrow and do the trade BUT the Ranger is in my dads name and he doesn't want to do the one hour drive to go and get it. Is their anyway I can have the title changed to my name and then trade it all in one day? Is it possible I can have my dad do the paperwork and then take it to the guy with the F150 to fill out his part? How the hell do you trade your vehicle anyway? I live in California and went onto the DMV website and found a form but I'm not sure if its the right one. The reason I want an F150 is because I am 6'2 180 pounds and I'm getting to big for the Rangers tiny cab. Please, some input and suggestions would be great!

I doubt the fees and taxes would be worth going through to put it in your name just to trade it away plus it probably isn't even possible. In IL it takes 6-8 weeks to get a new title so time isn't your friend either.

Is this a dealer or a private party? I am sure if he signed the title or did whatever paperwork is necessary you could do with it what you want and trade it. It is just like selling it. I can't imagine much difference.

can't you convince him to go with you? and I'm pretty sure on a vehicle trade you both need to sign the titles over and pay the respective fees

No way would I pay the state twice on two title fees. Yes your father could just sign the title and you go alone, but personally I don't buy a truck unless the seller is the person on the title, or has documentation that they are allowed to sell the truck.

How do I know you just didn't take the title from your father, sign for him, and sell his truck?

how are you going to be able to afford filling the tank on an F150 if you can barely afford the 2K to buy it? You should be happy your dad lets you drive his ranger. Are you buying it from him and then trading it? I would say that is only fair. Also, what about insurance? You won't be able to piggy back off the old man and get his better rates, because if this guy signs the title over to you, you have to buy your own insurance. If you're younger than 25, that is going to cost you alot of money too.

I'm also 6' 2" and a bit heavier than you and used to drive a Mazda B-Series (re-badged ranger) around. Only time it really ever felt small was when someone had to sit in the middle seat. Some kids just can't be happy with what they got I suppose...

I know... jeez, when I was younger, and I just got to drive my Dad's F150 around, I felt like I was King Tut. When my Dad gave me his F150, I thought I'd never want to give it up. Then I got some friends that dissed me for having an "old" truck (it was only a '99 with under 100k and it was '03 at the time) and they convinced me to buy an Escape. What great friends, eh? I got stuck with a 23k co-signed loan, working my tail off...

That's not the end of it... that Escape was falling apart... it was in worse shape than what my '99 F150 was, just after 2 years, and less than 75k on it. So I just wanted to get out of that Escape. I then went out and traded it for my '07 F150. Now I'm happy... but pissed!!!!! Why?

1. Lost the super cab that my '99 had.
2. Now since my Dad passed away, that was the only truck I remember him having that I got emotionally attached to.
3. The person who has it now, has like 350k on it.

I mean like WTF! Peer pressure?! Yes... but too late now. I'll be glad in a few months my '07 will be paid off, and I am not buying a new truck for a LONGGGG time!

Sometimes the newest thing on the block isn't what it's cracked up to be. Just live with what you got.

If I could, I'd turn the hands of time when I signed over my '99 and punched myself in the face for that move.

Its a private party dealer, the one who's trading the F150 is a 17 year old kid who wants a smaller truck (the F150 is in his dads name) and my dad bought the Ranger for me yes its in his name but he has his own truck he drives, Im happy with the Ranger but I seriously need more room and right now Im getting about 11 mpg with my V6 4.0 Ranger and I drive slower then my grandma, I am a very responsible driver and have been told that by truckers, firefighters, and close friends.

If you are only getting 11 with a 4.0 Ranger you must have it lifted a foot with 40 inch tires on it or something........

I **** you not, 2001 Ranger V6 4.0L SOHC 19.5 gallon tank filled up 17 gallons into the tank with my trip meter reading 200 miles even. Divide that and I get about 11.7 miles to the gallon. I honest to god drive so slow and keep my RPMs under 2000 at ALL times (except freeway of course but even then I drive 55-60 on the freeway and the RPMs are at about 1900) and Im still getting terrible gas mileage. Its also probably due to the fact that here in Beaumont, California there is a stop sign every 10 feet.... and no its not 4x4, no lift kits, and the tires are 235/P70 R16 which are the closest to stock as you can get em..

I doubt it will get "worse" mileage. the F150 was taken MUCH better care of, the guy even has all the service records for it. The old fart that owned the Ranger before me used it as a work truck and didn't even have the right size battery in it... Don't assume things you don't know.

Driving and stopping constantly does for sure effect your gas mileage, but 11.7?! My 5.4 with 20s gets 13 and i drive it hard. You may want to check into some maintenance to improve your MPGs if your gonna keep it. But if you get the F150, have fun! Its a better truck no doubt.

have pops sign the title and go trade it in. It is simple, if you want the F150 then just go do it. All you need is his sig on the title and its a done deal..
