Hey guys, my name is Austin and for my 16th birthday i got a 2003 base model F150 Sport XL. I am content with the 4.6L but i realy want to drop a 351 Cleavland in. I was reserching my idea one day but couldn't find any information about the engine mounts or any of the little details. I preposed the idea to my dad and we decided that we are going to make a 71' Mustang Boss 351 tribute truck, like Dodge has done with the 1500 Super Bee. I just wanted to know what y'all thought and if that engine would fit under the hood and if i needed to get a new transmission. Also if you knew anything about Hurst shifters that would be great. Thanks

dunno about any of the asked questions...but please tell me out of allll the mustangs to choose from....why a 71????????? Unless there are deeper reasons, like pops used to have one or something.

I have little love for the looks of the '71 - '73, but the Boss 351 is one of Ford's great motors. I knew a guy who had one and that big ol' '71 was a monster on the street. It would gobble up the much loved Boss 302 in a drag race, that's for sure. Originally Posted by Stu486

That being said, putting in an old V8 into newer truck is going to be a huge project. Probably kill the resale value, it's not going to pass smog, etc...
Nice idea to show the Boss 351 some love, but better left as a fantasy, IMO.

LOTS of money and way too much time to make it worthwhile IMO as far as engine/drivetrain. Just do what 98% of people do and slap some appearance mods on it (Themed like a 71 BOSS 351 of course, for your particular project) and call it a day.
Well first let me tell you ive alwase been a Chevy guy and 6 months ago i got my first f150 and i was sckeptical but i see now that ford just has way to much to offer and now im a ford man. Second, i chose the 1971 because it was the last of the boss mustangs and a truely special car. The cons. are that it was a big car and you could bearly see out the back window, plus they only made 1,806 of them. Pros. since they only made 1,806 71' 351 Boss's they are a super rare car, in fact the rarest of the 64.5-78 mustangs. So this truck is going to be a tribute to the fallen "clydesdales" because most likely you will never see one of the 71', 72', 73' boss mustangs and ford is already makeing a 2012 mustang boss 302, i figured i might as well make a 351. I thought mabey i could take it to car shows or something and have a truely unique truck.

I think it's a great idea, you'll have to get a wiring harness, best bet is painless wiring, google them, and then you'll need a tranny and bell housing. Also, you'll have to fabricate motor mounts, linkage and probably a custom driveline (I'd recommend a 9 inch rear instead of an 8.8). Depending on gears, it could be a scalded dog, and no, a B351 won't catch a 5.4 supercharged, but if you build the $#!t out of it, it very well could outperform it with the right crank. Probably won't pass smog, but depending on where you are, that may or may not be an issue. It's a great idea, don't see it done much.

I dont think its a good idea if its a daily driver.
Also why a Cleavland and not a Windsor? 351C's are MUCH harder to find parts for because they only made them for 3 years in mustangs. Do you know the difference between a 351C and a 351W? 351C stock for stock will out perform a Windsor. But with the aftermarket parts available for the Windsor its really not a very practical idea to choose a Cleavland over a Windsor unless you actually have a classic Mustang and want to keep it factory correct with a Cleavland.
Another reason would be that it is for a Daily Driver is would get about 6 MPG. And being young I doubt your going to want to pay for gas in something like that.
Also a 351 Cleavland is different than a 351 Boss block. A Boss 351 has 4 bolt mains and Bigger rods I believe and different valves. I dont know about that for sure tho. I do know it has 4 bolt mains and MOST Cleavland's do not have 4 bolt mains. Also you would have to get a 351 4V because unlike a 302 or 351 Windsor the 351 Cleavland has different heads between a 4V and a 2V.
My suggestion would be to either put in a Windsor motor or just keep the 4.6 and paint the exterior to look like a Boss 351 and leave the more reliable modern drive train in it. Because you dont see a Dodge Rumble bee truck like the one you where talking about just driving around with a 1970 440 6 pack engine and a 426 Hemi in it. They have modern engines in them. Only an exterior paint scheme and a few interior odds and ends
