Exactly which career do you want?

Yeah I sat down and talked to a recruiter for almost an hr. I was told that going through OCS and becoming an officer, I can become a BM and not just be a passenger on the ship(s). Im just going through what my recruiter told me. Unless IM mistaken and maybe he told me that going through bootcamp is the way to become a BM, which is probably the case.
As an officer though I would either do Law enforcement, homeland security, Port Operations and Waterways Management Intelligence.
Afloat operations...meaning working on a cutter? Whats the difference between ops afloat and ops ashore?

alright, if you want to go BM you have to be a enlisted member. bm's are petty officers and so are the other rated career fields. they all go to bootcamp.
Officers go to the coast guard academy for 4 years and get a degree from the CG. they graduate as ensigns and dont really have a specified "rate" (or job) they usually get sent out to ships or sectors to command type things, such as operations boss, executive officers, things like that.
