i think you are confused as to what enlisted and officers are.
im enlisted so im a E-4 pay. if youre going to the academy, you go to college and get as a officer, which all you will be doing is paperwork. haha! once you graduate you will be a O-1 which is a ensign.

My husband retired in March 2007. In for 24 years, retired an MKC.

Good luck with your plans!

naval architecture and marine engineering. Think thats a good way to become a BM? All the other majors didnt seem like they would help me do what career I wanna do.

I'm a little confused. 4 year engineering degree & you want to become a Boatswain's Mate?

Exactly which career do you want?

There is no way to become a BM if you become a officer, only enlisted can. have you been talking to a recruiter at all? or anyone in the CG?

Yeah I sat down and talked to a recruiter for almost an hr. I was told that going through OCS and becoming an officer, I can become a BM and not just be a passenger on the ship(s). Im just going through what my recruiter told me. Unless IM mistaken and maybe he told me that going through bootcamp is the way to become a BM, which is probably the case.
As an officer though I would either do Law enforcement, homeland security, Port Operations and Waterways Management Intelligence.
Afloat operations...meaning working on a cutter? Whats the difference between ops afloat and ops ashore?

alright, if you want to go BM you have to be a enlisted member. bm's are petty officers and so are the other rated career fields. they all go to bootcamp.

Officers go to the coast guard academy for 4 years and get a degree from the CG. they graduate as ensigns and dont really have a specified "rate" (or job) they usually get sent out to ships or sectors to command type things, such as operations boss, executive officers, things like that.

Not to steel the thread, but just voicing my thoughts. I'm a sophomore in college right now. If all goes well I will graduate and enter the Blue 21 program through the CG. Go to the OCS and then Flight Academy. Hopes are to fly a Helo after its all said and done.

OCS and the academy are different paths which will make you an officer. Did the recruiter tell you what you will have to do to enter the academy?
