The Oklahoma City school district has a new plan to teach at risk students. They are planning to use a rap and hip-hop educational tool known as....wait for it...Flowcabulary. The school district has been authorized to used $97,000 in Federal funds for the program and has already spent $10,000. One of the songs used in its "history" curriculum is entitled "Old Dead White Men." Some of the "thought provoking" lyrics are as follows:
"White men getting richer than Enron. They stepping on Indians, women and blacks. Era of Good Feeling doesn't come with the facts."
and my personal favorite:
"Andrew Jackson thinks he's a tough guy. Killing more Indians than there are stars in the sky. Evil wars of Florida killing the Seminoles. Saying hello, putting Creek in the hell holes. Like Adolf Hitler he had the final solution. 'No, Indians, I don't want you to live here anymore."
There's nothing quite like comparing our 7th president to Adolph Hitler.
It should be noted that the school district has removed Flowcabulary from its curriculum for the time being as complaints have come in.
The rest of the article can be found here.
Is there a place for this in our student's school? Does it really give at risk kids motivation to learn? Does it harm the students by intentionally creating controversial topics? Discuss...

This agenda laden program is bad for the kids and if it were to become widespread, it would be one more step on the path of ruining this nation by dividing it from within.
What a shocker this brainstorm was spawned in the public education system.
Makes you wonder how many equally bad programs they have that we simply never hear of.
Can't wait to hear the F150online members who are teachers defend this one.
Just once I'd like to hear a teacher acknowledge that there are elements within their profession that are using the schools to push a radical agenda. And that hiding that agenda under the cloak of educating 'at risk' kids is reprehensible. But that would be asking far too much.

NC has some of the best schools who cares about Oklahoma, lol. I'm just kidding folks, this is crazy. but this is what happens when the wrong people are able to make decisions no matter your color, race or religion.
We do have some good schools here in NC. If they ever started using that we wouldn't hear the end of it from both sides of races, politics, etc. I figure that is what is happening there also.
Yeah, they're called Universities.

I think it's a great idea! After all these are "at risk" kids. At least this way they will be learning something. That is what education is all about........learning.
You obviously don't understand that little things like FACTS, ACCURACY, and DECENCY are way over rated.
Bahahahahaha! I can't keep a straight face any more!

I think the IDIOTS who thought this one up and those who approved it should be fired! All the way up to whoever approved the Federal grant money......what a waste of tax money!

What a spectacular idea. Let's help teach 'at risk' kids by dumbing down the curriculum so that when they actually do graduate they're too ignorant to move up socially and stop continuing the cycle with more 'at risk' kids.
Sounds to me like the school board heard some rap music somewhere and said,
"Hey, is that what all these kids are listening to these days? Let's reach them with rap!"
"Yeah dude, that's like totally bitchen and... um... radical... and... we're all down with the syndome and stuff! Let's not be hatin' on the educatin' and we can be blangin' and hangin' with our homies!"
"Is that really how they talk?"
"I think so."
"Close enough! Let's do it!"

Where do you even begin with this one? First off if it’s supposed to be a teaching aid, why is it in Ebonics? "White men getting richer than Enron. They stepping on Indians, women and blacks. Era of Good Feeling doesn't come with the facts." Is there a structural sentence in that? Or any of it? I'd be outraged if I was a teacher/parent in that school district. Seem' to me it's one man pushing his views & beliefs on kids through our educational system. Did no one on the school board listen to all the "songs" before implementing this?
IMO, all this will do is further stereotypes (for all) and continue to divide communities. I don't know what the answer is for helping students that don't want to be helped. However, I do know there is no way this can be construed to being a useful learning aid.

While very dark, we did sorta kill tons of indians because God told us to go west...

Perhaps we could get an educational rap song about Native American on Native American violence and oppression? Or a rap about how African women were treated in Africa during the 1800's?
Jus' sayin, it wasn't only whites that had slaves, violent minds and profit motives.
