Time for a new laptop, need some help!

So it's been about 4 years since i've even looked at computers. Couple days ago my old old old dell finally took a dump, so I figured it time to upgrade.

I've narrowed it down to HP and Sony, but if you have any recommendations please let me know.

So what exactly should I be looking for in terms of speed? I have no idea what is to much and what is not enough.

Also, i'm looking to leave norton behind. I'm done with them. They've been nothing but annoying since day 1.

Sorry if this is kinda vague, I'll be happy to clear anything up. I just have no idea where to start

Thanks guys!

I just switched over to a Mac, and I love them! No need to worry about viruses, and I just formatted my Mac and the best part about that was Mac's move ALL your data, formats and then moves all your data back on, so you don't lose anything! I know you said you are looking at an HP or Sony, but, also look at Mac's. They'll last longer in my opinion.

What all are you looking to do with it? Just surf the web, etc.? If so, have you checked out the Netbooks? Nice small device to carry around the house with wireless.

Start by listing what you intend to do with it.

General use? Heavy gsame=player? Watch movies. Just surf the web? Business apps? Heavy multi-tasker? Lotsa stuff to store (like pix, compressed audio, etc)? |Need a web-camera? Bluetooth? Home theatre connections (HDMI, digital audio, etc)... Need a big screen? Blu-ray support? On the road a lot? Are you clumsy? A 99-pound wealkling? Does weight/size matter? Batery life? Touch or multitouch display? Tablet functionality grab ya?

My current recommendations revolve around the Dell Latitude line ( like the E-series - including ATG and XFR variants if required) or Lenovo. Steer clear of Sony.

I prefer a business-class notebook for reliability, support, managebility, ruggedness.

No fudgepacker, rumpranger, multi-coloured cases fer old Bubba!

Or ghey Mac products. Jobs is a complete tool I ain't supporting him, aight!

Or fergit all that crap and just upgrade to the ultimate:

For security software, take a look at Eset. When you purchase it, for 1 or 2 years, upgrades are free to newer versions. Just download and install. It is also rated fairly highly.

I've become a big fan of Asus laptops. Reliability statistics are outstanding - number 1 in the business with Apple a distant second and Lenovo third. Newegg carries a wide selection. For security software with Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials is free and does a real nice job without getting in the way of everything.

Budget, intended use, and screen size preference, please?

HP and Sony are not very good choices.

Asus, or Acer? Acer is now #1 w.r.t market share ...

Thanks for quick responses guys,

For the most part I'll be using it for school, music, and some gaming (nothing hardcore). I also watch a lot of movies/TV on hulu.

My biggest gripe about computers is slow speed. Especially when trying to multitask.

I'd like to keep the price around 1000-1500, and sceen size under 17".

Sony was recommended to me by a couple guys at work, and my last HP that I had was great, until Norton destroyed it.

Again, i'm not brand biased, the only brand that I refuse to go with is Apple. There computers are just insanely over priced for what you get.

ETA: One feature I'd really like to have is blueray with and HDMI out so I can watch bluray movies at home on the big screen. Has anyone had experience with this? I haven't really read up on it, just caught my eye on one of the laptops at best buy.

Acers are a little on the cheap side. Mine has keys sticking, screen messing up, etc.

I highly suggest an HP

Hi bud - yep, I know. They have been around for many years - and make great mobo's and cases. They actually pre-date Best Buy.

I just was not aware that they were anywhere near tier 1, 2, or 3 in terms of quality in the notebook space.

Gotta go look now - dang it GLC

I'm not real impressed with HPs quality. My Toshiba kicks *** but its older and I'm not too fond of the new ones. My dad has a Sony and I like it a lot. The screen is gorgeous and its good quality over all.

If I were about to buy a new laptop it'd be an Asus.

Runs Windows - for real, not virtually, not emulation - for real.

Also runs Mac, naturally.

It's the best of both worlds. A win-win.

Well it seems like Asus is a big favorite, I'll stop by best buy and see what they have. Does anyone know of any other places that will remove all the trial crap from the computer prior to delivering it?
