Thinking about a motorcycle!

I want a dual purpose dirt bike that I can ride around town on too. I'm looking at the 2010 Kawasaki KLX250S. Anyone have that bike? How do you like it?

I got a nice 2005 Kawisaki Ninja 250 and its a great bike. I do all my own engine work and this bike is really easy to maintain. I cringe to see people bringing thier bikes to overpriced dealers.

He wants a dual sport bike. Harley's don't tend to ride so well on single track trails, lol.

If you plan on riding freeways or with a passenger, I'd get something bigger than a 250. Before Manual flips out, dual sport bikes have much worse aerodynamics than your Ninja.

If you intend to do lots of dirt with very little street, consider a used dirt bike that has been street legalized enough to get a plate.

I think the 250 Kawasaki would be fine if you are relatively small, don't intend to push really hard in the dirt and don't intend to ride on freeways.

A used bike to consider would be a Suzuki DRZ-400.

great info dave, thanks. i'm thinking the 250 might be a bit too small too. i want a four stroke and definitely something i can ride on the street too. i am 6'4 and 190lbs and also would like to be able to carry a second passenger, something like a 110lb female with long blonde hair and big ***** hahaha. how about Honda products? do they offer a 450 four stroke?

Honda makes a fine 450 four stroke single in both motocross and enduro versions, but neither is street legal. The enduro version, the CRF450X, might be able to get a plate. These bikes that are designed as 'full time' dirt bikes tend to be more maintenance intensive than something designed for dual sport use.

If you want a nice reliable bike that can handle two up and highways, the XR650L mentioned above is a decent choice. The downside is it is pretty heavy for tight trails. Kawasaki used to make a KLR650 which also had lots of fans. It's probably even a little less dirt worthy than the XR650L, but will get you anywhere.

Oh yes, if it isn't a Harley, it isn't a motorcycle...

Please. You guys also wear the Harley do-rags, leather, and $30 t-shirts?

Who would buy a oil leaking run of the mill Harley? Oh wait everyone that has way to much money and thinks Harley's are the best.
If ya want a nice dependable non oil leaking motorcycle buy a Victory you wont regret it. Wont buy any other bike again Victory all the way.

There used to be a 250 dual sport Harley Davidson back in the day.

Actually, it was an AMF Harley Davidson made in Italy by Aermacchi. They had a 350 four stroke, too.

Even for the mid '70s, most those Italian Harleys were crap. The MX version was pretty fast, though. A guy I knew had one of those.

You can find clean used Suzuki DRZ-400 for $3k-$4k, a great bike to ride around town or through some turns.

Honda's Dual Sport bikes come in either a 650 or a 230 four stroke, both are air cooled. I'm not impressed by that. Yamaha's prices are too high and a 250 is the largest engine they offer. I would love to find a 400-450cc liquid 4-stroke that's street legal and trail capable.

I like the sounds of the Kawi KLX250 and maybe with an intake, exhaust, and a jet kit I could pull some power out of it, I don't know.

The guy at the Kawi store wanted to sell me a used KTM 530EXC but I think they're ugly and a bit too much bike for what I'm looking for.
