The son of Paul Tibbets isn't happy about it either.

Why can't we just learn from the past then put it behind us?

Not unless he commited suicide at the ripe age of 92, back in 2007, which is stated in the article.

Seems a little over the top to say that it's wrong to even send an ambassador for the memorial... Why can't two counties just shake hands, forget the past and move on(no apologies needed from either side)?

All's fair in love and war - and that goes both ways here.

The article mentions Paul Tibbets, who was the PILOT. Not the Bombardier.

Though the Bombardier didn't kill himself either, he passed on much younger at only 81. Like Tibbets, it's said he had no regrets.

They knew they were saving lives... unfortunately many people today think we dropped the bomb just to be mean or vengeful and they have no concept of what a land war in Japan would've cost the world.

I was just thinking, we should have a presence at the ceremony. Let's take the Enola Gay out of mothballs at the Air and Space museum at Dulles, and do a flyover at Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

That would be SO WRONG.

It was Bockscar that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki.

glc you're exactly right. I heard my grandpa say that right after 9/11/01. He few 40+ combat missions as a B-17 machine gunner. Wounded, shot down 3 times. It took me a while to understand what he meant, but it makes perfect sense now. America has not come together in a concentrated, central focused effort since WWII, and probably won't ever again.

I know, however, I do not believe Bock's Car is around anymore, at least not a complete aircraft like Enola Gay.

Edit - Just checked. It is still around at the Air Force Museum at Dayton Ohio. we can have a duel flyover.
