Keep in mind if the signal to the repeater or access point is already weak, that will be the choke point. While your access point might connect to your computer with a full signal, the access point will have little or no better connection than you computer connecting directly to the signal. The access point is designed to create a larger network in a situation like a home where you can fill in dead spots or areas of low connectivity - not amplify a weak signal.
Also, I'm not sure of your situation, but keep in mind that stealing WiFi is a crime with some significant punishment.

My apt has multiple wireless routers throughout the 4 story, 25 unit per story complex, so it won't be stealing, because 1) the internet is free (paid for in our rent costs) and 2) it's unsecured.

Being that the building is of a concrete framing structure, and the siding on the inside and outside of the units is hardiplank and/or brick, there are multiple dead spots within my room at least. The best signal strenght I get is by my window, so I would be placing the repeater in the window sill to hopefully get a full signal strenght.

 

So does anyone else have any input??

I found these description and such on the DD-WRT website. This sounds like EXACTLY what I'm trying to do, but I'd like to get confirmation, and/or personal accounts if any one else has done or tried this before.
