Computer Help with card reader?

Hopefully someone here nows more about this than I do. I have a dell xps desktop with the multi card reader xd/sd...... and so on. When I insert a card into the slot the icon on "My Computer" shows that the card is inserted into the slot although when I click on the icon to read the contents of the card a box opens stating that to "Insert card into dive..." this happens on all card slots. I have removed and reinstalled the device and tried to update the drivers, even though the actual device does not seem to be the problem. I have Vista, I know, i know, don't flame me. Any help that is actually helpful is gratefully appreciated.

Does the card have data on it? And if so, has it worked recently on another computer? Also, do you have another sd card you can try on your computer. Best thing is to narrow down if the issue is indeed with the media card or the computer slots.

Even beyond whether there is data on it, has the card been formatted. Particularly by the device that uses it, ie camera, etc.

What I've been having to do with mine on Win 7 is shut down, pull the plug off the motherboard and reset the connection to it. Not sure how savvy you are, but its how the external USB is setup too. Follow the cable, remember which pin set it sits on and unplug it.

This may sound redundant, but have you tried fully shutting down and rebooting your computer?

My 7 year old compaq computer doesnt play well with my Micro SD card in the SD card adapter, but it works on my fiancee's computer just fine, hers is 2 year old HP running vista.

I tried updating XP to the latest driver software, and it still didnt work. Something to do with the speed of my processor versus the speed/size of the card i think.

I would recommend trying to use it in the device and run a USB cable from the device to the computer, should solve your issue.
