Built ford tough

A family friend is the manager of a tire test company here in town. They have a 94 Crown Vic bought it brand new in 93 and today it rolled over 1,000,000 miles. All original engine 4.6, transmission, rearend. The most major thing they have done to the car in 16 years was radiator and waterpump and front end work. Everything else is original. I didnt believe him and he pulled out the records and it was ture. The oil has been changed every 3,000 miles or 5 days since it was new.It burns a 1/2 quart in the 3000 miles. I think its pretty impressive, the body is beat to hell but over the years its probaly nailed 30 or so texas deer. We took it to lunch today and it drove like a 50,000 mile car.

My mom had a 93 crown, ahh the memories. sold it for a toyota sequoia(before toyota had all the recalls lol). From what I can remember it had maybe 150,000 miles or so when we sold it and ran very good.

Damn it seems like they would have a lot more miles on it if that is the case. They do a lot of driving I guess.

800 miles a day for three weeks then the car may sit for another month or two before the put it in another test. They have toyota pickups thats up too 450,000 miles, 2 07 f150's that is sitting at 290,000-310,000, 3 99 rangers ranging from 550,000 to 610,000. They have about 4 2000 s10s that have about 500,000 miles on them and all three have had 3 engine rebuilds he told me they get about 150,000 out of the s10's before a rebuild. All the fords are all original.

You must not have caught that you put every 5 days instead of every 5 months.
That would be aprox 1200 oil changes or 3,723,000 miles.

There is something to be said aboutthe Crown Vics. 95% of the partrol cars and taxis are Crown Vics. I get scared sometimes when I get in a taxi and it has 500K on the odo, but the dang things just run and run. Something to be said about simplicity and about the 4.6 engine.

The very early 4.6's weren't anywhere near that good. Back in the early 90's I had a friend that owned a limo service. He was complaining that he was only getting about 120k out of his Lincolns with the 4.6 (91's and 92's?) where the old 5.0's were getting about 300k before a rebuild. He tried Caddys but those were total garbage.

The early 4.6's were not very good, bad valve seals, they would blow blue smoke at about 80 K miles! I rememember leading a Memorial Day Parade with a bunch of Politicians marching behind my patrol car, I would intentionally put her in neutral, & slightly press on the accellerator & smoke out the Politicians behind me, when the Parade came to a rest along the route, my partner was in hysterics, I just shrugged my shoulders & advised them to buy me a new patrol car cause I needed one....(LOL) Got a new car the following week!.....

It's nothing to get 300K out of one with just taking basic care of it. They're one of the best-kept secrets on the used car market. Damn good, simple cars. Easy to fix (usually) and parts are cheap. The 2003-newer ones don't drive too bad either, with the frame and suspension/steering revisions. It's a damn shame they started making them fleet-only in 2008 and the whole Panther line (Vic/Grand Marquis/Town Car) is dead after 2011. People just don't appreciate larger rwd vehicles anymore. Damn shame. I would have liked to have seen them update them to more modern standards and keep making them.

The cops aren't too happy with the CV going away. There isn't any other large rear drive sedan out there that does the job anywhere near as well. The FWD Impalas and Tauruses are okay for city use but don't make good pursuit vehicles. The local PD here tested a couple Chargers and they don't like them or big SUV's.

I've heard from friends who are cops that the Chargers are not reliable at all, especially the brakes. I don't think they will make it as long term options.
