Unhappy computer problems

I had to get a new laptop, because a dog destroyed my old one. This happened about a month ago.
I've enjoyed it very much, and have had zero issue until now
Now I can't use netflix or firefox. It seems I have windows 7 in 64bit mode.
What can I do to make it compatible with the currently available applications. I've been through some of the help files, and have seen mentioned that I could change to a 32 bit mode. But I should back up all of my files first.
When I downloaded firefox or silverlight(seems to now be required by netflix) the computer seems to download OK, but when I extract the files, they appear to work, then they just disappear like they were never there. What's up with that?
Anyone have any ideas?

I have been looking around in the Medea center, then re opened th netflix site to see how to download the vids to the medea center, and now it is working through my browser again I haven't rebooted, and still can't get firefox to work. I'll keep working on it.
I love netfix. I made a bunch money on my investment, and have watched allot of things I haven't seen before. I hardly notice the television anymore.
But I do have to figure out how to install the tuner in the Medea center.
The Netfix site itself must have been having the problems earlier.
Thanks.

If it came with a 64-bit OS do not downgrade to a 32-bit. The 64-bit is required for 4gbs of ram and up. If you go down to a 32-bit it will only see 4 gbs of ram

Thanks for the tip, I did read that about the memory.
I'm deffinetely having problems with my browser though. Now I can't play ebedded youtubes.
The only thing I've changed, was I tried to change my search provider from Bing to Google. But I did that after I was having the first problem.

Don't know why you can't use Firefox, using it it now on Win 7 64 bit. Make sure you get the current version, 3.6.4.

The Firefox download I have is the 3.6.4. I click on the icon, the get a text box that says it is extracting the files. When the meter gets to 100% it just dissappears.
Netflix is still working . So it must have been a problem at thier site last night.
I'm on a different computer now. But last night when i shut that one down, it got locked up in the shutdown mode. I let it run that way for about an hour.
Then I shut it down with the task manager. Early this morning I booted it up read the news and checked out F150online as usual. No problems. I didn't try firefox though. I'll do that later. Today is oil change day. I've got 6 to do.
I need to trace out a refrigerant leak on a Dodge also

Could be you have a bad download or something else is conflicting with it. I have had absolutely no problems with Firefox with either the 32 or 64 bit version of Win 7. So far I have only found one application that will not run on Win 7 64, a diabetes tracking software by Accucheck. Everything else has been running fine. I went from XP to Win 7, and that includes old software that wasn't even listed for Vista. Didn't even have to use XP compatibility mode.

PS, if it is not a bad download of Firefox, it may be your security software stopping the installation. Try turning off your AV and firewall during the install.

I've never even opperated a Mac. I started with a trs64 and a cassette backup, doing basic back in the seventy's. Before that I had a small amount of Fortran Compiling. I even still have an ADM2E in my computer pile somewhere. I learned DOS at 3.0. I never did the first windows release. I just didn't see the need for Icon shortcuts.
In the mid 90s I decided to take Accounting 2 for my biz. I was in the computer lab a the School, and couldn't figure out how to copy a disc on windows 95, so I did it in DOS. This chick sitting at a computer next to me was amazed, and said "You know DOS" , all I could think of to say was "I wish I could type". Kinda sad, I think I woulda had a chance with her before that.
But no Mac, just never was around them

Thanks Kingranchcoy. The windows media center is amazing, once I started finding my way around in it. The graphics are much sharper than using the brouser.

I haven't got back to the Firefox file yet. But now I have lost my spell checker. I haven't changed any settings on the computer other than changing from Bing to Google, and the only reason I did that is I have been using map.google with my microsoft mappoint delivery software, so I'm just kind of partial to it.

But any ideas on why I lost iespell check. I was using it just yesterday.
