Question on totaled car??

About a month ago some girl went through a stop sign and totaled my 02 Lincoln LS. I didn’t have collision on it and her company wouldn’t budge above 75%. It wasn’t my fault, I had no traffic device but in not going to get into that now. They deducted a $950 salvage cost. So if I send the car to one of their salvage yards I'll get a check for $950 but with the 75% I’m still am not breaking even. I wanted to make a little extra cash so I have enough to buy another car.

I wanted to sell some parts off the car since I have it home in the driveway. Anyone know how much I could get away with before they don’t give me that $950. I know some people that need parts but don’t want to blow that cash. I wanted to take out the headlights, tail lights, and some interior pieces. But also the motor and trans are in great shape. Anyone have any experience with a situation like this?
Thanks

I spent way to many years in collision work and I can tell you, they are not gonna pay you the $950. for the car if you take parts off it. They may not even take the car at all. That's not gonna fly, unless you're dealing with blind people, and then they'd have to be without hands and arms too, so that they couldn't feel that the parts were gone. The ins. co. will just deduct the $950. from what they pay you and let you keep it.

Get a lawyer and sue.

They should pay the full value of the car if they totalled it.

75% of what?? Many insurance companies use "fair market value" these days to cover/replace/total a vehicle regardless of what KBB says. If you're saying they are offering you 75% of KBB, that may be pretty darn accurate if they're using FMV like i said. And for your vehicle in today's economy that may be a pretty darn good price. Check with them and see what they're using to value your LS. KBB still has my truck up around $16K or something...yea right! Good luck selling it for that.

When the economy and market are down, using FMV hurts, but in the long run it is fair. Man, it hurts saying something an insurance co does might be fair. You can expect them not to cover their interest and it's also not a business for you to "make" money. Breaking even should be the goal. But like I sad, check to see what they use. If in fact they are only giving you 75% of FMV, then yes, that's BS and you should discuss that with them and investigate pursuing a resolution. Good luck.

You can take off ANYTHING that was not stock, as long as you replace the stock item back on. I have a friend who works at a salvage/rebuild business and they really don't seem to care if your Lincoln LS comes in with Ford XL bench seats, as long as there is a seat.

That being said, I might be interested in your wheels, seats (all of them) and steering wheel with airbag. I can send replacement parts back to you.

Maybe in Montana, but most areas of the country if you are gonna take the good saleable parts off and put junk parts back on, it ain't gonna fly, especially if they paid $950. for it. They get a lot of them "Johnny Cash" specials up there in Montana?

Just tell them you are feeling some pain and maybe going to the Doctor, They'll want to settle more quickly and pay you above the market value just to get it done. Do not allow them to make the Doctors appointment, go to your own. Which is a good idea to do anyway.

Hey now...Don't go disparaging Johnny Cash. The Man in Black drove the coolest car around. Hands down.
