not that I think oil drilling should be banned... but the current refineries have been running full steam for a long time. The refineries is where the neck of the funnel is.

the off shore drilling has been banned for a while as it is. it wont change anything seeing the market is shifting towards gas saving. gas prices are creeping up but at least they arent $4 a gallon.

We are all just collateral damage in this Obama agenda.

Each one works according to his abilities and gets according to his needs.

What did you expect from a socialist? Every nation in the world is getting on the band wagon to develop the new oil field south of Florida except the folks that use the most energy- us. He is not allowing US companies develop resources in our back yard while the rest of the world cashes in. The development is not going to stop, just US companies can't get in on it. And then people wonder why companies are moving to other countries and why nothing much says "Made in the USA". People voted for change and that about all they're gonna have left in their pockets before this moron gets thru screwing us. And yes, this will definitely cause gas prices to jump....remember the speculators? They're gonna have a field day making money on it. Get ready, $3.50 a gallon gas in coming to yer neighborhood and soon.

The high gas prices we experienced under the Bush administration was a real eye-opener and, ever since then, the issue of off-shore drilling has been used for political gain. But consumers and voters should use due dilligence to insure they are not hood-winked by big oil money.

First, it is important to come to terms with one important fact:

The price of gasoline in the U.S. will not be significantly higher or lower depending on whether the moratorium on new off-shore drilling is lifted or not.

There are many reasons for this but the most important reason is simply that the volume of new oil that would come onto the market as a result of lifting the moratorium is insignificant in terms of world production (and oil is definitely a global market). Transportation of crude is done in such huge volume that it makes up a very small percentage of the cost. I live in a deepwater port town with two major oil refineries and at least 3 smaller specialty refineries and another 2 major refineries within 20 miles. It is big business here and the ships arrive regularly. If you have never seen a super-tanker in real life from a couple hundred yards (or closer), it is truly a mind-bending experience. The scale is huge and the closer you get, the more your mind is bent!

I am in favor of increased domestic energy production for other reasons but it won't drop the price you see at the pump. The statement that lifting the off-shore drilling moratorium will make a significant difference in the price at the pumps might sound rational on the surface but it is a huge lie. This becomes apparent when you look at the amount of potential new off-shore production using the most optimistic assumptions.

If you are interested in why (and how) you are getting ripped off at the pump you need to read this testimony provided to the U.S. Congress in 2008 by the Director of Public Citizen's Energy Program. It is probably the most accurate and complete analysis of gasoline prices I've ever seen compiled in one easy to read document:

http://www.citizen.org/documents/House08.pdf

I live within 20 miles of 4 major oil refineries and a number of smaller, specialty refineries. There are definitely games going on with fuel prices because, once the State and Federal taxes are backed out of the price at the pump, my area has one of the highest rates in the nation even though we are surrounded by huge and efficient refineries that produce more gas than the region can consume. The above report exposes the regional profit margins of major oil refiners around the globe. It's a good read and I guarantee you will learn plenty of interesting things about how consumers are being ripped off. Hint: It has nothing to do with the off-shore oil moratorium on new drilling.

Read on, if you please.

Not good enough for the USA, but good enough for Brazil. Look just a bit closer and you'll see the interest George Soros has in Petrobras, the Brazilian oil company.

It's fascinating to me that George Bush had eight years (and what, 4-6 years with Republican controlled house/senate?) to overturn the drilling moratorium and lease the oil/gas rights but failed to do so.

It's even more fascinating that the Obama administration is being attacked for not doing it already (and he's only been in office for a year and two months)!! Lord knows he had a full plate with two wars, a crumbling economy and Republicans who can't seem to get along with anybody (themselves OR the Democrats).

Regardless of your position on offshore drilling, Bush did indeed lift the ban back in '08. If you think that we should not endeavor to pull anymore oil out of our own backyard as at least part of the solution to our energy needs, than I'd say you're a fool.

Yes Real, its the Republicans who are lined up in unison against the healthcare bill, and the democrats are fighting amongst themselves.
But you're right, its somehow the Republicans fault.

No comment as I work in the oil and gas business. It pays my mortgage and gas bills.
