Whats wrong with my laptop?

like 3 months ago i bought a dell d600 laptop for $75 i know its old but for $75 i thought what the hey, so it all worked perfectly until a friend of mine was using it while i was at the store and when i got back he said somethings wrong with it, and i asked what happened and he said "i was on the internet and then it started ticking like a clock so i turned it off" and i said ok, so i turned it on and it was ticking and it was booting up but gave me an error that says "Primary hard disk drive 0 not found" i googled the problem and i read that the drive might not be connected properly or the drive has gone bad, do any of you guys know what any other solution could be? i'll probably take it apart tomorrow, if worse comes to worse i'll just buy another hard drive i guess

let me know what you guys think the problem could be

If it's saying the drive is not found then it probably died. The ticking could have been the motor controlling the read/write head and it finally gave up.

Computers is my line of work and i guarantee that it is the hard drive, if it was clicking there is no fixing it. The hard drive should be accessable threw the bottom of the laptop or right there on the side. It is still a decent laptop so it is worth buying another hard drive. As you knowsince you are putting in a new hard drive you will have to reprogram windows. If you have any questions let me know. This is a pretty good deal on a new hard drive and i have ordered several hard drives from these guys. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-160GB-Dell-L...QQcmdZViewItem
160 gig should be plenty unless you are doing alot of videos

Yes reinstall windows, i would NOT run windows vista on that laptop it will be extremly slow, i would consider running windows 7 on it though. Windows 7 does not require alot of prcessor speed, memory etc. I would definetly go with windows 7 if you dont want xp. Only thing is you need a dvd player to install windows 7.
