Doverman pincher and home insurance...

So the wife is wanting to get another pup before too long. Our little Shiba Inu is about to die... Anyway, I really want to get a Doverman, but she insist on saying the home owners insurance is outragous if you have one of these dogs. I told, just don't tell them, but she doesn't like this idea. We have a doggie, but we also have a fenced in back yard.

Give me some insight here!

We have a German Shepard and our insurance company would not insure us unless he was neutered. Shepards are considered a dangerous breed. Don't know who decides what breed is dangerous for insurance purposes, but we did not argue.

We had the deed done, and they insured us, however we never had to prove to them that we done the deed.

Did'nt matter to us as we were going to neuter him anyway.

You have to look at the specific policy. But if your policy DOES say something re: "if you have X breed of dog, you must have Y coverage," then you should get Y coverage. Otherwise, if something happens and Xdog hurts a small kid, your homeowners insurance may not cover it, and the victim will come after your personal assets.

OK, let me get this straight...you had a German Sheperd and it was the nicest dog ever, but MOST German Sheperd's are mean as hell??? I'm sorry but you can't have both, and you can train a Chihauha to be aggressive if you want to. German Sheperds, Doberman's, I've had them both. I had my Dobie personal protection trained, along with me of course, and he would NOT hurt a fly, unless I gave the command, and then, WATCH OUT!!! My Sheperd was a 112 pound "puppy" all his life. I chose not to train him in the personal protection aspect anyway. BOTH dogs are VERY LOYAL...will give their lives for you and your family, IRREGARDLESS what the situation is. The are both great family dogs, but can be strong willed, and need an owner that is stronger willed. Unfortunately, many insurance companies do list them both as dangerous breeds, along with Pit Bulls, Malamutes, Huskies, and a lot of other BIG dogs. Before you get one, you'd better check the fine print with your insurance comp, and see what is required. Better safe than sorry.

What? Insurance on a dog? Never heard of it... if I had a dog and it died in a house fire, I'd just go out and get another one; the heck with the insurance company.

What he is trying to say is just because they are known as being something doesn't mean they are. There are lots of misconceptions about GSD, it is all in the raising.
My GSD

He is now about 1" taller (28 at sholders) and about 30 pounds heavier (125-130) he would not hurt a fly, unless you touch me or my wife.
Here is a puppy pic because I like showing him off.

Any dog can be mean and any dog can be nice. It all depends on the way they were raised. my mom has a rat terrier and he is a mean SOB, But I also think he is a little "Special"

My dogs find this thread relative to their interests...

Doberman's are actually naturally smarter than other breeds and seem to be easier to train as well. Atleast that is the way it seems since I have labs, beagles, and yorki's currently. Get one as a puppy so training will be easier and read some good articles and watch some TV shows on training. Most of the time, if a dog behaves badly it is because of the owner just like when little kids act like rowdy animals it is usually the parents fault.

Go for it! just make sure you buy dog food by the bulk....

I see your point, however...

You can't be in control of the dog, as it's a living creature that has it's own mind. It's got it's own intelligence basically.

Also, all you need is a sign that says "Beware of Dog" and your behind is covered. People don't have to go on your property.

Where does it say in the laws that if you own a piece of land, that I have rights to step foot on it? If I step on your land that is immediate grounds of trespassing.

People sueing for dog bites are added to those who sue others for other stupid crap.

I've gotten bitten by many of my friend's dogs, one in which almost took my finger off... did I sue him? No, because I knew the risks.

Lets face it, common sense prevails around animals -- they can bite. If you are stupid enough to go on someone's property and think that pretty little doggy won't gnaw off your hand or leg, then you are stupid.
