Computer Hard Drives?

So my kit computer is crapping hard disks on me, like they all seem to do after 2 years or less. Only good thing is this time it was in a raid 0 config and i have warning this time. so i have been able to back up all my important pictures of my daughter.

It seems Maxtor is utmost crap drives, is seagate still toward the top of the list?

How do I get past 2 years with a drive before i start having issues?

How can I find out if my current failing disc is salvageable?

I can't answer your questions about the drives, and I'd like to know myself. But I wouldn't waste anytime burning what I wanted for sure.

there is no hard drive out there that wont have issues after time. Its not if the hard drive will crash but when. The are mechanical and constant moving parts and heat over time will all have issues.

1 year or less is unacceptable though. I shouldnt have to start over yearly.

I remember the days when my hard drive was very minute size, but them sob's lasted over 5 years. i only tossed them cause i dont think they were over 10 gig lol

I've been using the same Western Digital Drive for almost 2 years now. I have several of their drives that are at least 6-7 years old and still run perfectly. In fact I have a 60GB WD running in the system that records video from a security camera I had to install. That drive had Windows 2000 on it when I put it back into service.

I wouldn't buy anything other than a Western Digital drive for my computers. But I do like the Seagate external drives.

back in 2006 seagate bought maxtor so any maxtor drive made after 06 is much higher quality, as for seagate being a good brand i prefer western digital bc ive always had great luck with them but seagate isnt to bad either. you should just get an external to back up ur pics that way its not running all the time. also seagate and wd come with 3 year warranty :santa:

I have a 750 seagate networked into my system, its my "important" catch all, its been around 3-4 years now.

sounds like WD it is then.

How about finding out if my current craptors are salvagable? i would like to purchase 2 new 500mb WD and set them into raid0 config, then put the 2 250 craptors into slave.

The problem I'm having with one, is just like a previous one acted before it was replaced under warranty. The server was purchased with an araid mirror. But when the warranty tech arrived he changed them both. I did have a good back up of my important files, but did lose some information of my own. I wasn't there when the tech left, by my Wife told me he replaced them both because he said they were configured wrong at the factory.
But anyway I'm 1and 1/2 years older and the computer is doing the same thing.

Perhaps you shoud buy the big one and pick up a zip or iomega drive for a back up. I do the files that have changed back up on aniomaga everyday. It only takes about 5 minutes. You may find one on the cheap somewhere.

I have used a couple diff brands both in my business and home.I have an Iomega that is still going strong after 9 years...I recently bought a Seagate and so far no issues after almost 2 years. When shopping I would also consider the software used and how user friendly it is.That is why I choose Seagate for my last drive.
