I am a patented inventor. I learned how to search patents myself, checked to see if there was already a similar product and then began the patent pending process myself.

I then approached investors who hired patent attorneys to do an infringement search. The patent ended up costing $18K. This is larger than the cost of most patent searches because there are similar products on the market.

If you are willing to take the time and have the money it is possible to do it yourself.

Search for similar products. That could turn into a life long obsesion in itself.
So I have to first figure out where to start looking. But what about something that someone holds a patent on, but never put into production.
Also thanks for the information.

Initial search for ammonia refrigeration came up with 3207 patents. That could be narrowed down with more specific information.
If someone already holds a patent and hasn't produced the product you have a few choices: 1) Wait until the patent runs out which is usually 17 years unless they renew it, 2) Approach the inventor and request to purchase or lease the intellectual property, usually in exchange for royalties or shares in the company, or 3) Change your invention and make it 20% different than the original patent (completely subjective).

Above I misstated that my patent search costs $18K. That was for the search AND filing for and receiving the patent. Patent searches generally cost $1-2K depending on how many similar patents there are.

My idea isn't with ammonia refridgeration, that was another topic that came up in this thread.
