I would definitely go with an i7 as the 775 socket is pretty much near it's end of life. Just about everything will be socket 1156 or 1366. With the 1366 being what will have the best continuation of products.
I just built (last week) a system with the Intel DP55KG MB and an Intel i7 870 2.93ghz processor. The MBs I would look at are Intel, Gigabyte, or Asus. Something to be very careful of is memory, and getting the right voltage and type as the i7 processor is what controls the memory now, not a memory controller chip on the MB.

There's always the AMD route. Everything AMD is cheaper and perform better in some areas.

I have seen test results with the i7 vs older Intels and current AMDs. They blew away everything, especially the AMDs.

Can't find it right now, but I saw another with the Core 2 Quad vs i7 1366 vs i7 1156 vs AMDs. The test above is i7 1366 vs AMD Phenom II, both with overclocking.

this is actually the way i am going i am in the process of building a new gaming rig right now

if not just find a good Asus or XFX with at least 1066 DDR 2 RaM that sports that Intel processor

ASUS board hands down. I have been building computers for many years, and I love those boards. Even there budget lines have more advanced BIOS that are easier to use and more efficient.

DO NOT buy an MSI board!!! I have tried them 3 different times. The first two were dead right out of the box. The third one lasted 1 month, and the customer was ticked!

Guess I'm falling way behind the times when it comes to computers. AMD's are still cheaper, and IMO it's not worth spending top dollar for hardware that is outdated by the time it hits the shelves.

The best board for an E8400 that's available at Newegg is an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo.

However, there is something to be said for going with the new socket - either an i5-750 or i7-860 on an Asus P7P55D.

AMD may have some competitive stuff, but I personally will not build with them for various reasons.

Look into XFX mobos chris. I'm a fan of them.
Not with a 10 foot pole. Have you ever tried to get support or service on them?

I third the Asus MB. I've built five or six computers and had the best luck with Asus.

Why not wait a bit and go with SSDs once the price comes down and the software catches up? Solid state drives are the future.
