Here is the terse run down.
You get four downs to move the ball 10 yards. If you do move the ball 10 yards you start all over with another four downs to move the ball another 10 yards. That keeps repeating until the tip of the ball reaches the end zone line, which is a touch down. Each touch down earns you points, but you have to give the ball to the other team. The other team starts over with four downs to move the ball 10 yards.
If either team does not move the ball more than 10 yards in four down, then they have to give up the ball to the other team. The other team will get the ball where it is on the field. At any time, each team can kick/punt the ball to the other team and tackle them when they catch it. They give up the ball, but the other team will start where you tackle them. In most cases, if a team does not move the ball 10 yards in just three down, they will kick/punt the ball to the other team, on the other end of the field, rather than risk giving up the ball on this end of the field after failing to go the required 10 yards after four down.
So in most situations, you get three downs to move the ball 10 yards, and concede to punting on the fourth if you don't make it. You can run the ball or throw a pass. The team with the ball is called the offense. The objective of the offense is move the ball down the field to the end zone without relinquishing the ball. The team without the ball is called the defense. The objective of the defensive is to prevent the offense from moving the ball more than 10 yards or to make them relinquish the ball.

Ive been watching football for 15 years and every year there is some new dumb rule they add that makes football more and more like golf (heinz ward rule and tom brady knee added about 5 QB tackling stipulations) but some basic rules are NO Holding, No false starts, No Tackling the reciever before they catch it, No Facemask or Jersy collar tackles (horsecollar), No late hits...The list goes on forever, the more you watch the more I think you will like it and understand the game

The REAL object in NFL football is to plan the plays around the continuous commercials that are broadcast. This requires great skill on the part of the teams that are playing.
Rugby football is, of course, a much faster and more "manly" game.

I've been telling all the Cowboys fans around here that the Redskins just did them a favor.
Now rugby i get!!! A sport for gentlemen played by hooligans!
LOL.....I've watched a couple of rugby games since I've gotten my new digital tv tuner....some pbs station I never got before. I'm totally confused as to how that game works. The only thing I picked up on was that they got more points if the player kicks the ball between the inner set of goal posts and I think only one point if it goes through the outer set. Looked pretty cool with some hard take downs...just don't understand what's going on....maybe we need another thread explaining rugby for us Americans.
