GM Rant

Ok, usually I'm pretty open minded when it comes to "parity" in vehicles. Most noteably the whole Ford vs Toyota truck topic. But I just had the misfortune of seeing the latest GM commericial with the new "chairman" giving us the ultimatium ( sp? ) about letting the "best vehicle win".

I'm sorry, American be damned, even being Canadian I see this idiot and company kicking every taxpayer in the teeth by putting out such a bogus commericial.

Really, where was all this "quality product" labeling 10 years ago. Yes, Ford did trim the fat years ago and didn't need a bailout, and I have yet to see a Dodge commerial playing on the whole "sorry we have screwed up for the past 20 years and thanks for the bailout".

I had some "loyality" to GM only because of the whole NASCAR aspect of their support, but after seeing this last bit of dribble. Besides the Corvette, GM has contributed ZERO to the history of the Automobile in North America.

Please, prove me wrong.

I drove 'em at one time because I mostly worked in GM dealerships. Finally had to give 'em up when I just didn't have time to work on 'em all the time. Went to Ford where it was only a rare hobby, not a full time job. I bought new and used, didn't make any difference, you still had to work on 'em all the time. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned.

I've owned several GM vehicles in my lifetime to date! The only one I've ever had trouble with was my 1991 K1500 4x4 Pickup! That 5.7 leaked oil like a spaggetti strainer!....(LOL) My latest a 2005 Caddilac was an awesome vehicle!.....

I've owned some good Chebys in my life. The best thing they ever built was the 350, I had one in a Camaro that should have died a hundred deaths

We had a 05 Tahoe for 3 years (wifes truck) 60 k miles we put on it and only saw the dealer twice for the yearly inspection. All we needed to do is tires at 56k. The truck had good power, comfertable ride and a good onboard computer. It was the only car/truck we ever had that had zero problems. We had a 97 Tahoe before that, and it had a tone of problems.

I had a 93 K1500 4x4 as my first truck and I really loved it. No real problems except it kept eating up batteries and alternators, but that was only at the end and not really Chevy's fault- Autozone's parts. I sold it when it had 180K miles and it was still running strong. My DD right now is a 98 S10 Blazer 4x4 and although I havent had any real problems, the quality after 11 years is terrible!! The thing rattles and shakes like crazy on the road!!!

GM's new ads remind me of the ads they had in the early 90's: "GM's putting quality on the road." It was an ad with them torture testing a Lumina dropping it from reverse to drive smoking the tires with Top Gun music playing in the background. Yes, GM has for the most part had durable drivetrains, it's the rest of the car that is junk.

My dad is buying new company trucks for his logistics company. He called me and asked which company to go with. I said not a communist one, so Ford.

Hopefully this year smartens them up, all of them. I as a car company president would be quite sick to my stomach to see a jap car company dethrone me as top auto maker. This from companies that are known for industry leading technology and manufacturing at one time. Still, when half your cars sold here are built by foreign labor and parts, not hard to cut costs and do battle. I'm just happy Ford kept an even keil.

I have respect for GM, they make very nice looking trucks and I like many of thier cars/SUVS as well...I just think people take way too much out on specific brands because it's not a Ford. Ford has had its fair share of problems as well... running lean, the 6.0 PSD, injectors, you gotta weigh both sides. Ford wins with trucks hands down, but again Ford needs to because look at their market... they have the majority in the commercial market so they are forced to keep updating and having a stronger truck to keep ahead. As long as I like the truck, I will always buy Ford trucks, but sometimes I feel people just jump on the "I hate x brand" bandwagon. Just something to consider.

I guess what I mean is that all I have owned is Chevy and thats what I grew up loving, not saying that I didnt like Ford just prefered Chevy. My current truck is my first Ford, my dad bought a 97 x-cab F-150 when I was 15 (just learning to drive) so that helped contribute to my love for Ford as well. I can't say that I'm loyal to 1 brand but for now I prefer Ford.

I just happen to know Big Ed Whitacre and I can tell you he apparently believes what he is saying or he wouldn't be saying it. He doesn't need that job and didn't ask for it. He has a reputation as being a straight shooter. Not saying that all of GM cars and trucks will be the best on the road. All makers make a lemon but there are apparently processes in place now that were not there under Wagner. Before I would throw GM under the bus, I'd stand back and watch. They might just surprise you.

But like you, I'm a person of habit. I've been driving Fords since 1974 and see no reason to change. I think there is plenty of room for GM to be #2 in quality. What Big Ed has to figure out is how to get their buyers back.

You could photoshop Lee Iacoca's head on him and it would be like going back 30 years. Lee saved Chryslers bacon then and put 'em back on the map, but as far as him bragging about "if you can find a better car, buy it!" Come on, they were making the K- T**d... er... I mean Car. They hadn't improved quality any, they just got a slick Italian salesman to represent 'em, that's all. Like politicians, I actually feel sorry for people who believe salesmen.
