You can own a pistol at any age with parental consent, but you can't buy a handgun from a licensed dealer until you're 21. Although, you can receive as a gift, inherit, or buy a handgun from a private seller without parental consent at age 18+, . Also, I don't believe you can purchase handgun ammo until age 21 as well.. You can carry a pistol unlicensed under the terms the others mentioned without any repercussions, but there are no statutes that say you have to disclose that you have a concealed pistol in your vehicle.

honestly, i really hope you try to arrest someone who knows the laws and thumps you for being in the wrong, knowingly.
go over to texasguntalk.com if you have any gun questions.
Is it legal for you to have the gun in your car? yes.
Is it smart? probably not. especially in c/s. you might run into some officer that doesnt know the law and will arrest you. ya you can get out of it later, but thats a big hassle you really dont want to go through. I carry my shotgun in the truck sometimes. As long as you are not part of a street gang, and are not involved in any criminal activity it is perfectly legal.
When they ask where you got the gun though, you better be sure to tell them it was a gift.

What is with all the responses in this thread about the "cops not knowing the law" and arresting you anyways?
It is the responsibility, duty, and obligation of every licensed law enforcement officer in the state of Texas to know and abide by the laws.
This is not some obscure law. This is a topic that was recently before the state legislature and has gained tremendous media coverage.
A cop who arrest you for legally having a handgun in you truck should be prosecuted for unlawful arrest and a violation of your 4th amendment rights.

I'll be in the clear. You're not allowed to have possession of a handgun until the age of 21. That is why you'll be under arrest. While I was going to the academy the department had to provide a document to a cadet who was 20 to show to a police officer if he ever got stopped that he was directly enroute to a police academy which required him to have in his possession a handgun. It's against the law to have it in your vehicle if you're under 21.
Yes I said it was legal I just didn't edit it when I found out I was wrong. Let me do it now. Happy.
I'm doing a little digging to find out for sure. I post my finding later.

Here in michigan you can own a handgun at 18 if it was given to you by a family member, but you are not allowed to buy one from a dealer. And you are not allowed to buy handgun ammunition till your 21. So if your not 21 you can buy 9mm for a carbine but not for a handgun. This worked for me every time.

Some places will ask you what gun its for if they know anything about guns.
They recently changed it. Havnt you read all of the penal codes listed in this thread stating that? And that is besides the point now. Back when you stated that it was legal to carry one. You stated that you would arrest me anyways. How do you explain that? Are you going to taze me and then hit me in the head with your night stick as well?
Don't be an idiot.
