Your career is going to be training as a volunteer?

I'm going to guess that does not pay very well.

If what you are asking for is advice from firefighters because you have decided on a career as a firefighter, well good for you! I'm sure there are some firefighters on here who will be glad to help.

Sorry, I'm not a firefighter, but people might put more thought into their responses if you make the effort to word your post clearly, use capital letters, etc...

great career choice. Im a paramedic, but roll with Fire on half my calls. My suggestion:

become EMT certified
Go to school, get at least a BA in fire science or something relevant
Go through an accredited fire academy
get as much experience as you can (join a wildland fire crew, do as many 24 hr shifts and ride alongs as you can, join an explorer program or Cadet program)
never give up, because you will hit speed bumps on your way

I'm a paramedic in St Louis. Working at a ambulance district and for a private ambulance company. Still trying to get into the academy here, but they only accept 70 a year, so it's rough. I absolutely love my job though and could never imagine doing anything else, except fire. Like MIG said, get your emt license and get as much experience as possible to make sure it's what you want to do. It's definetly not for everyone. Half of being a good fire fighter is being a good medic. And fire fighter medics make the big bucks too. At least here in STL county. Good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions!

Btw. Medic school is ridiculous hard.

What county are you in? I volly in PG county as an EMT

First thing you need to do is get affiliated with a department. You will not be able to take any courses until you are affiliated.

im sure he already knows that. here in california, you also need certain certification and become an EMT-I, and need at least 100 hrs of time on a rig, before you can apply to medic school.

VFF is a very rewarding experience. our county commissioner once told us: "it takes a very special person to wake up at 3 in the morning to help someone hes never met before for no pay whatsoever"
