Storm Chasing & Ham Radios

Okay so first off I joing TAMSCAM which is the Texas A&M meteorology group. There is a storm chasing branch that is fairly active durning the storm season. Those that are drivers need to get their ham radio license. We are going to study together but im a little curious of what it is exactly. I know it is basically a long range CB. Do the radios work similarly? Any other info you would care to share with me?

The Amateur license is fairly easy. I went to go take my test for it but I was 20 minutes too late (after a 120-mile drive) and I never got back to it. You have to learn different radio setups (Yagi antenna, etc) and things like atmospherical "bounce". Like I said its fairly easy and really fun. My g-pa is an Extra (top of the line) and he keys morse code to people across the world really easily.

Basically HAMs are an emergency service because of the mobile use and long-range of them. I'm part of the community and theres a cool website you can checkout. www.radioreference.com

I'm hoping that Manual will chime in here, I know he has a few setups in his truck.

KC2QQR here...

I have a General... and plan on getting my Extra ticket soon...

HAM radio is fun and I encourage more people to get into it.

Not all the time will cell phones and computers be available.
