A couple iPod questions...

So, I got my new iPod touch, and of course they don't come with an actual paper manual I hate surfing for instructions....

First question; If I turn it off via the "power button" on top, whenever I go to use it again, it takes like 15 or 20 seconds to boot back up.
Whereas, if I'm using it, then just set it down, it will turn off (or, should I say, the screen will go completely black) after 1 minute (I know I can set that time for longer, but anyway) Then, when I pick it back up 15 minutes, 1 hour, heck 10 hours later, I hit the function button on the front, and Bam ! It turns on instantly ! (actually, I have to slide the thing on the bottom to "unlock"... will get to that in a second)
But my question is, if I don't actually turn it completely off via the power button on top, will it use more.... maybe, a lot more juice being on "standby" ?

Second question; I bought this wall plug charger. When you plug it into the wall, and the iPod, it turns red when it's charging, and green when its finished. Does it have to be > fully charged / light turned green, before you can unplug it, from the iPod ? I mean, when I hit the function button the front of my screen, it always gives me the "Slide to unlock" thing.... but a few times it didn't want to unlock. In retrospect, I'm thinking the charger was still showing red, and that's why it didn't unlock ?
How can I get it to unlock, if I don't have time for a full recharge ?

Finally; Do I have to use the wall charger ? What if I just left it plugged into the USB port of my PC each night, instead. I never had a problem with the lock, when it was plugged into the PC.

Anybody with an iPod Touch ?

Thank you,
Fish

Think of your touch as more of a mini computer. What you're talking about is comparable to shutting down a laptop completely vs. letting the screen saver kick in. It will use very little power on the "standby" mode. I would suggest turning it completely off every now and again to clear any lagging programs, free up memory, etc.

Don't worry about getting it a full charge, it will be fine. It should unlock while plugged in, just make sure you're sliding the bar on the screen all the way. (I know I can use my iPhone while charging, and the touch is pretty much the exact same thing without the phone part. Have you tried using the WiFi yet?)

Yes, you can charge it though the PC just fine.

No need to turn the iTouch completely off every time its not being used. If you are just setting it down or running into a store for a short while then just allow it to go into "standby mode" which is analogous to your computer going to sleep when idle. It allows you to leave your iTouch and come back to it at exactly the same state later without waiting too long to system to restore itself. Power is still be supplied to the RAM so activation is rather quick. Turning off the iTouch prevents power from being delivered to the RAM thus erasing it which will require a longer boot time the next time you go to use your device. So, that being said, I would recommend turning the iTouch off when not being used for more than 2 hours or so. This will save battery life and prevent frequent recharging. Remember that the battery in your iTouch is not replaceable and once your batteries have lived their life and no longer hold a charge your iTouch will require servicing to replace the battery or will be tethered to a charging cable.

Chris you might check out the iHomes http://www.ihomeaudio.com/products.a...9&dept_id=1006

Granted, that site is expensive. You can usually get them new on Ebay for around 30-40 dollars. It will charge the ipod while docked, also. That's what my kids do with theirs. Usually go to sleep with iPod music and wake with it too. Or you can use the standard alarm clock noise.

Right on. Thanks guys. I think for the time being, I'm just going to turn it completely off at night, before I go to bed, and not turn it back on until I get up (on my days off, when I'm carrying it) or when I get home, on my work days.

Also, I'm going to charge it straight from my PC. But come to think about it, the USB cable that is now attached to my wall charger, is detachable... So I might try the USB that came with the iPod (the one I've been using to attach to the PC) on the charger, as I'm thinking that USB might be messed up, causing problems with it's release mechanism....

Hey mxracer, those things look pretty cool I'd snag one up right now, for $40, if I could find one....

Peace,
Fish

If you just press that top button, without holding it down it will put it in standby.

I always heard its better to avoid charging them with the computer. It doesn't give them the correct voltage and batter goes quicker on them. Could be wrong but I always been leery of charging anything off my pc.

Chris,

I hope you don't mind me piggybacking my Ipod question on your thread, maybe the answer will help you too? I hope.

I'm planning on buying an Ipod touch also, a 32 g version.
Here's my question as I know didlly about Ipods.

Suppose I bought 2, one for me and one for my wife,
can I now tranfer my entire 22gb itunes collection to both ipods?
Mine and hers? Or is there some sort of 'one itunes per ipod' thingy in place that prevents that sort of thing.

Thanks guys, and sorry for barging in Chris, but this thread is helping me a great deal as well.

It can be done, the only problem you will run into if the music has been purchased off of iTunes store. Then there are parameters set to only allow it on one iPod. Although, I think it may allow you to put it on like 1 other but it uses up some the number of choice you have. To be honest its hard to explain, but in the long run yes it can be done.

Thanks Watson,
Yes, my entire collection of music has either been imported into itunes from CD's I own, or bought from the itunes store.

Well if your only going to have 2 iPods i'm pretty sure you will have no problems. Never tried it but should just be plug and sync for both of them.

Habs,
This is from Apples TOS for iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html

(iii) You shall be authorized to use the Products on five Apple-authorized devices at any time, except in the case of Movie Rentals, as described below.

Also, here are refurbished iPods direct from Apple. Don't know if you saw the other thread or not but I've bought a lot of refurbished items from Apple and have never had a problem with any of them. Plus they still carry the same warranty. Items on this link change daily too, I might add.

Thanks buddy,

I did see the other thread and have been considering the idea.
I've also been browsing Ebay listings as well.

So when I eventually get one, I just plug it into my PC, and it automatically detects and downloads all my itunes?

Yep, that's exactly what should happen.
