Test drive protocol

I'm selling my '99 F150 XL on Craigslist. It's been a while since I did something like this on my own, and I'm wondering what I can do to protect myself from theft and/or damage from people who want to test-drive it without coming off like a total ****.

At minimum, shouldn't I make a quick copy of their DL and insurance card, like the dealer did with me? Should I ask them to leave me their car keys?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tracey

If you're that worried, then definitely copy DL and insur. or go with them.

As long as you have comprehensive insurance you should be fine. If they steal it, your insurance will pay. Most people drive up to test drive a car so they leave something behind. I wouldn't worry too much.

I would also trust your gut instinct. If the person gets dropped off or something suspicious just go with them. If your worried about your personal safety, arrange for the test drive to happen when you have friends or family around. Never, never sign the title over until the funds have been verified b your bank. You could let them take the car but not that title.

Not to long ago I sold a car on Craig's and I had a lot of losers call up who could barely speak english but I finally held out for the right family. These people where so nice and they were buying the car for their son and there was no BS. Cut and dry. Beautiful

I haven't carried anything but liability on my truck for the last five years.
If this is true in your case, your first step is to call your ins co and get full coverage, this will protect you when someone drives it.

I can't honestly say that I'd recommend 'girlwithtruck' go along on test rides.

Now if 'girlwithgunwithtruck' were to ask, I'd say whatthehell.

Many years ago a neighbor of mine had a really nice motorcycle to sell. Similar to a Goldwing, can't remember exactly what it was. I guy called and came by to look at it. He wanted to just take it for a short ride around the block. When he wasn't back in about 15 min, the neighbor was afraid he had run out of gas, since there wasn't much in it. He went looking in the neighborhood for him and couldn't find him. The guy had driven up in a car that was at the curb, so the neighbor went and looked inside. HOT WIRED!. He called the cops right away. Meantime, with no sign of the motorcycle, he got a ticket in the mail a couple of weeks later, for leaving the motorcycle parked on the freeway shoulder. WHAT! He had to go to court and explain to them what had happened, and that's when he found out that Highway Patrol had stopped as the guy was walking away from the bike to get gas, which he had run out of. When HP asked for license he said he had left it at home and the HP accepted the registration and wrote the ticket and gave the guy a ride to get gas, which he did and a ride back to the bike. HP drove off, he put gas in the stolen bike AND THEY NEVER RECOVERED THE BIKE! Was he PXXsed! If there is any way that you can get a BIG buddy to kinda be there with you when someone comes by, it would be a good idea. We live in a good area and yet about 12-15 years ago a guy had a late BMW advertised for sale and he went with the guy that called to look at it and a ways away from home he stopped the car, pulled out a gun and shot the owner dead and shoved him out of the car into the street and drove away. I don't actually remember them catching that guy either.
