What do you know. They want to dump more money into this program that encourages people who have old, inefficient cars (because???) to take on a car loan. Enyone want to predict how long untill there are stories about mass reposessions?

This is a great deal, as long as you don't pay any taxes. It's not a deal at all of you do. You and the rest of the tax payers are the one paying for this program.

Who really qualifies for this any way? My wife just bought a new car (2010 Mazda 3 5-door, really nice car for the money!). Her '97 Honda Civic that she bought new, I would think would be considered a "clunker". Nope. So, if you have an old car that, when new, was fuel efficient according to EPA estamates, you're SOL.

I heard about this a couple of days ago, that they were going to run out of money. I expected them to. Can't say I'm surprised. $1B dollars. How far is that going to go. I agree on the mass repos also. I've heard Commercial Real Estate is going to be next in line though.

Just goes to show you that being responsable just gets you screwed...

I'm willing to bet that the $1 billion allocated for this program has already been exceeded.

I have a buddy who works at a delearship and the 40 plus cars that they sold under this program have yet to be approved by the government. The paperwork and process to file is a nightmare. This is the same issue many participating dealerships are experiencing. I see why the govt wants to put a hold on the program....process the already sold vehicles.

I'm about 50 miles north of Dallas. I bet many people are disappointed. They planned to trade tomorrow and/or over the weekend. Oh well, probably saved many folks from getting into debt.

It says in an updated version of the story that they're not going to suspend it, guess they're going to dig deeper into us taxpayers pockets to get more funding. I just can't see the dealers making any more of these deals if they think the money isn't going to be there.....unless the government makes them.

Once again this administration, from the top idiot to the idoits in congress, showing no fiscal responsibility. It's law that the program no exceed $1B but I suppose they did not want the backlash right before they go on their break. So, instead of waiting for all the already sold cars to be processed first and see how much money is left, they instead continue with no balance sheet. And these are the same people pushing health care.

Damn Government Program!
I was one of the first in line but, my friggin dealer didn't process the paperwork fast enough and I didn't make the cut. They told me the deal was off!

I had to give up my new ride.
Looks like I'll be driving my clunker a while longer.

I think it will buff out.

Drove through our town's Auto Mall yesterday. Lots of "Cash for Clunkers" signs and promotions going on. Many radio advertisements are being run.

Looks like the auto dealerships (most of which are struggling) are going to have eat all the extra advertising expenses they have incurred promoting this boondoggle.

Now the program is on hold, how many new car buyers are going to hold off buying? Basically, if I was going to buy, now I'm going to wait until Congress figures out whether they will re-issue the program. That might take months for them to sort out.

So auto sales surge when the government gives away $4,500 per car. Program falls apart within days due to government in-effectiveness. Sales slump while buyers figure out whether $4,500 give away will re-surface.
