Who all is on Offshore Oil Rigs?

Who all on here is on offshore oil rigs? What rigs are you and and where are you located at the moment? Tell me about it. My grandad has been working on the oil rig for over 30 something years i believe he's still on today and working as we speak. He is on Ensco 81 I dont remember where they are right now though. Ive been thinking about going to the rig when i get out of high school is this a bad idea tell me some other options that i could do straight out of high school. I would like help i really cant think of much other than the rig and game warden. Im not long from having to get my life together and have a load of responsibility dropped upon me. Yall help me out here I really need it.

My step father works and has been working off shore rigs for about 8 years now. Hes making the jack too. I worked up a resume for Epic Divers back in 05, they told me to cruise down with him on his next home leave and they would find me something to do.

I chickened out because I am really terrified of the ocean. its a long story.

If your Grandpa has done it for 30 years wouldn't you trust his opinion if you should do it or not before you'd trust a stranger on a message board?

There's lots of options for kids straight out of high school. IF they want to work. Those are the kids that are hard to find. If you work, show up everyday, and don't complain the whole time you're there, you'll go far. Look for starting out as a laborer, apprentice, etc. Watch, listen and learn.

I disagree I wish that lets say before I had joined the military I would have had more people to discuss what route I took before I joined up. Listening to the people around me rather than getting some complete strangers opinion could have put me in a better path to snag a job which would pay off in the real world.

I have a 30 year fixin to be retiree at work im sure he told his son not to work for LE. But his son took a different approach and is now a contender for Superintendant at some prison systems.

No need to argue here, im just saying I think its great to get some different opinions, rather than take G-pas word and solidify it.

Dont work Offshore on the rigs but am in the Oil Field and know plenty of fellas that do. They love the MONEY and most dont mind the time away from friends and family. Thats one thing you need to take into consideration. Youll be out there for 2 weeks up to a couple months at a time. Now when you get off you have a fat chunk of change sitting in your bank account and lots of free time. Problem is most guys are awful at balancing that. By time they go back out they are broke.

What about a Technical school, the Police Academy or Fire Academy? My Father-In-Law is a Fireman and has it pretty damn good. Theres months were he only works about a total of 8 days. He also makes decent money.

If I ever get laid off, that's gonna be my first stop.

My brother in law (and many cousins) work offshore.

One of my cousins is on the BP Thunderhorse rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

I went to work in the oil fields of Oklahoma and south Texas right out of high school I worked my a$$ off for a few different companies 80 sometimes 90 hours a week it took a toll on me i did a bunch of back to back hitches and saw plenty of fresh high schoolers come after me a few made it 90% didn't

the only thing i can tell you is make sure you go to work for a good company with nice equipment Ive thrown chain on a couple rigs that shouldn't be standing and am lucky i never got hurt.

on another note ever though about America's 911? the Marines cough cough

Have you ever thought about going to Alaska? I went up there when I got out of high school to Kodiak Island and there are so many jobs doing so many different things I went there with two buddies, one went and was an assistant to a land surveyor and lived place to place in the mountains and one went on a commercial cod boat as I worked masonry just learning different stuff and we all made a ton of money with no educations. Everything in Alaska pays well but you have to not mind the cold and there are always a ton of jobs open. Now two years later im back in Upstate going to College just needed a few years off.

yea i cant stand cold weather i despise it hot weather is what i would rather do i spent last summer in holt, florida framing a house with my cousins, dad, and uncle and that concrete slab with no shade around was HOT but it never slowed me down. The summer before that I was rewiring a house in florala, alabama right there on lake jackson that was easy and simple to me.And the summer before that i took about a week to set up a trailer and do other odd jobs like plumbing and electrical work of all kinds in florala and andalusia.
