Who all is on Offshore Oil Rigs?

My best friend is currently on rigs for the summer. He hates it. Mostly the being away part. He's in Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Says the work is hard (and 12 hour days) pay is good, but being in the middle of nowhere sucks.
