Can you run license plate numbers?

I was just wondering if anyone knew how you can check a license plate number out. One of our clients reported a incident to us involving possible theft and/or vandalism and gave us a plate number. Before we call the cops I wanted to run the plate to see if we knew the owner or if they were tied to our company somehow. Thanks.

I don't think you can---at least here in Ohio. Even police cannot just run plates unless they have cause. Say, if they see somebody and just want to find out who it is, they are in the wrong.
They can only run the plates if they are checking for a crime or speeding, etc.

Law enforcement and DMV...Insurance companies get partial data.

To run a plate though you have to have a reason otherwise if you get caught you could have your access revoked.

Back in the day guys used to run plates as a dating tool....they got in some trouble for that one.

And people are still paranoid about posting pictures of their trucks with the plate showing.

I found a new never installed tag on the street in front of my house. I picked it up and called the tax assessors office and told them I found the tag and could they tell me who the owner is. They said sure no problem and gave me the guys name and address. I called the guy and he came over and picked it up. He said thanks. He left the tag on the trunk of the car and forgot about it and drove off with the tag laying on the trunk.

Correction, we have the power. Sure I'll probably have some explaining to do as per why I ran it if I'm off duty.

Wrong,,,,I can too.

I run them all day,,,don't need no reason to do it. When I run one it also checks for wants/warrants. Now, have I run one as I get passed by some hottie? Nope, never,,,(clears throat.)
