Need a New Career...

So I've been out of college since May 08... Graduated with Marketing and Business Admin degree... I started out working with my friends dad as just a job until i found a "career"... Once my class basically graduated the economy fell through the roof and It has been really had to find jobs. So I stuck it out with where I was currently.. Workin with 3 really good friends as a Hog Barn Electrician. Making about 18/hr... But my boss suddenly passed away a couple months back and it has been just 4 guys (all under 26yrs) running the business.

Its been fun no doubt, but with no barns going up recently due to economy... I haven't worked but 3 hrs in the last 3 weeks... Luckily my dad is a farmer so he always has work for me... With that being said, I think its time for me to really put forth the effort and get out and find a career....

So around the Indianapolis Area the only thing I'm finding is sales jobs for BS company's that look like a joke... But I've also noticed a few listings for auto sales... My Fiancee thinks I'd make a great Ford truck salesmen since all I do is play and talk about my truck haha

But anyone on here work for a dealership... how have your sales been.. You guys think it would be worth it to get into the auto business

Okay long thread is over... haha

A friend of mine, that has been selling Gm cars and trucks for about twenty years, just recently through in the towel. He's now selling Woodmen insurance. Does the brighten your hopes?
Just hang on, I've been through times like these before, It will get better.
You might try selling Carbon credits, I understand there is a growing market there

Way things are now, try to find something steady that will get you experience if nothing else for when the economy turns around. I graduated a few years ago with an accounting and business admin degree. Couldnt find anything great, ended up staying in logistics/transport for a while then things went south fast with the economy and fuel prices, now I'm in law enforcement.

a job and a career are two different things...my father always said a career is something you love to do and would it for nothing..your passion. a job on the otherhand is just to pay the bills.

Its not easy finding a career, easy to know what you love doing but hard to find a way to pay the bills doing it, I was always good at logistics and it paid well but hated my job. Took me a few years, but I after the economy tanked and I had to find a new line of work I found something I love doing. You will too.

do not get married until you have met your career goals..same goes for your future wife. ive had friends that got married ,had kids and are now stuck in "jobs" they hate just to pay for the kids etc..i realize kids can come at anytime but..

health care, health care, health care...

Try and find a job with a company such as GE selling medical equipment or the like. A good friend of mine does this and is doing quite well for himself. Health care is one of those professions whether you are a provider or someone involved in it elsewhere that always will be strong.

I graduated in may 2007 with a 4 year business degree from penn state, and I am a heavy equipment operator and foreman for our family business. I had numerous job offers when I graduated to start out at companies for 11 bucks an hour and I decided that what I'm doing now is a far better financial choice as well as a career choice. I changed my outlook on careers after I graduated. I thought I could only do strictly management with my degree, but I soon found that you can apply the background to any job and help you succeed. Have you thought of applying your marketing background to your electrical business?

Interesting... I've always thought a job was a short term way to make ends meet. A career was a long term investment in your financial future, that provides room to grow and prosper.

Something you love to do and would do for free is a hobby. If you're really lucky, you can turn a hobby into a career.

Anyways, back to the OP's question... Right now I'd take anything that provides steady work, benefits (health care, 401K, etc) and experience.

You're young, odds are you won't be doing what you're doing at your current job, or your next job for that matter, 15-20 years from now.

Have you considered working for your Pops full time?

Definitely the strongest field of growth in the USA at this time.
