So I ran out of fuel...

Talk about feeling stupid, I drove two days with the needle below red and figured I'd fuel up after I picked up a buddy on our way to a concert Friday evening. Well we ended up coasting to a stop about 500 feet from the gas station! My buddy got out and started walking towards the gas station for a gas can and fuel. I managed to start it up one more time and get enough momentum going to coast into the McD's next door with no power steering. Speedway charged over $9 for a freakin 2 gallon gas can that I'll probly never use again. Guess I shoulda put my tractor's gas can in the back of the truck just in case I did run out, but no. Couldn't have picked a better place to run out of gas tho. Who knows what my fuel pump sucked up from the bottom of the tank now. Usually I get 340-350 miles per tank full, but this time I got almost 420 miles! Won't do that again!!

Change your fuel filter right away.

BTW, I believe our trucks have the fuel pump in the tank. The fuel helps keep the pump cool. Hot pump = more wear. More wear = possible premature failure.

Basically, there are reasons your low fuel light comes on when you still have about 5 gallons left.

Oh crap and I just put a new filter on a few months ago, oh well I'll do it again.
Thanks for the info.

I only mentioned it because on two separate occasions I was stranded with buddy's who had recently run their tanks dry or very low.

One had a clogged fuel filter, one a seized up fuel pump.

Running a little low from time to time is no big deal. Running dry is another story.

Haha. I did that once on my way to school. It was when I just got my license and I thought I was going to be late for school (my dad told me if my grades dropped or I was late he'd take the truck) so I was sweating bullets but low and behold I ran out of gas right in front of the county Sherrif's house, so he gave me a ride to school and afterwards helped me get a gallon of gas before my parents got home

Ah, the good times. I've come close to that occassion, but not yet

I thought I was being slick once. I had a 20 mile drive home from work. When I got to work that morning my light had just come on. I figured I had enough to get home and fill up at my regular gas station. Got home and didn't feel like it so I let it go and figured there was a gas station a mile from work where I could get gas after work. Another 20 miles with the light on, I get to work just fine. I leave and am on my way to the gas station, pulling in I run out, on an incline. I jump out and start pushing, getting pretty much nowhere, everyone watching me, and out of everyone there some middle aged woman runs over and starts pushing. After that there were about 10 people that ran over to help her out. So yeah, I was feeling real good about myself.
