Cig start installers beware, lol.

Yesterday when I was relocating my radar detector I loosed the connection on one of the wires. When I did that it came loose when I was driving and shorted out fuse 102 (the one that controls all power to the key). Me and my grandma were eating breakfast after church and it wouldnt start. So an hour and a half later I solved the problem and Im back home. So those of you that installed the cig lighter start watch you connections and go back in and make sure they are secure. It only cost me 4 dollars to fix, but fixing your truck in the sun while you should be jetskiing blows, lol.

what is a cig lighter start?

you should not plug anything into the cigarette lighter, that is what power accessory sockets are for.

if you were careful during installation this would not have happened.

why was the cigarette lighter installed on that circuit?

hes talking about the push button start mod people have added in place of the cig lighters....

the cig lighter fuse also runs your obdII, so when that fuse blows you cant check codes.

Well it has nothing to do with the cig lighter other than the casing. Everything else is rant through other stuff. Last night I went and resoldered the connections and put lots of electrical tape on them. The CIG lighter connection is still behind the dash, it just isnt connected to anything. This wouldnt have happned if I wasnt messing around in my steering collum. So calm down chief.

And why are you not allowed to plug stuff in your cig lighter?

I use my cig lighter socket for electronics - never had a problem with it.

i'm calm. i was just trying to figure out what you were talking about in your last post. sorry.

you can plug stuff into the cig lighter but that's just not what that circuit was made for. so if you have one, it is wiser to plug stuff into an accessory port.

have you looked into heat shrink? little more durable and less prone for problems, just a suggestion. tryin to help a brotha out.

the cig circuit is exactly the same as the accessory one. it just has the coil heater for the lighter. my dads old truck only had a cig lighter and we plugged stuff into it all the time with no problems

Right...

I thought I recalled reading a thread here where a user had a blown fuse on the cig lighter and the accessory port wouldn't work either... ie: both were even on the same circuit.

I think in the 2004-2008 body style the acc. and the cig lighter are different fuses. The front and read power points are together, and the cig lighter is by itself. I THINK...

The coil heater is in the lighter itself, not the socket. The socket is functionally identical to a power point except you can't stick a lighter into a power point and expect it to work.

It's not a good idea if it's ever been used as a lighter socket - there's gonna be crud in there from the lighter. If it's clean, no problem.
