Gas Guzzler Bill?
Why the hell does the government care about gas mileage when they put a ton of tax on gas?
Id think theyd want us to be driving cars and trucks that get 5 mpg just so they can make more money from the tax on gas.

They want you to reduce fuel consumption because of global warming. Duh.
Global warming is a great deal for our government. They can tax the beejesus out of all industry because of global warming.
The huge amounts of land the government owns are worth lots of money because development rights can be sold to industry for carbon credits.
If global warming does not exist, your government can't tax industry excessively or sell carbon credits to the Chinese (the basis for our future economy).
If the govt. does not make efforts to take low mpg/high polluting older vehicles off the road, their green constituency will think we are not serious about stopping global warming. Hence the 'buy a junker with taxpayer money' program. And it's a boost to the auto workers union, so it's a two-fer.
Basically, it's a meaningless charade that will cost taxpayer money, while benefitting special interests. Washington DC has had lots of practice at that game. They win, you lose.
