Well I can top that one..today..took the truck out and guess what 1/2 mile from my house, another rock hit my windshield and left me with a star in the windshield again, after I just replaced the windshield eight weeks ago from having a large bullseye and crack from a dump truck. This is getting expense as I have a deductible on my insurance. This is some hell hole that the roads down here in NC are full of f------ gravel.

Hey, did your insurance pay for you a new windshield? I have had a crack in mine for about 6 mo. now and am getting pretty sick of it. That sucks about yours.

Get used to the windshields in the F150's guys....I have had my truck since June 1999, and have already had four windshields put in it, and the one that is in the truck now, is going to be getting replaced come spring when the sand is off the roads up here in Minnesota. Seems that the windshields catch everything...Rocks, Sand, Birds....

Question

I don't especially want one but I was told that a bug deflector will protct the windshield by deflecting rocks too. Any truth to this?

Bug deflectors are just an advertising gimmick to generate sales for the much more lucrative 'bug hardhat' market.

Rocks have no means of income and are totaly ignored by Madison Avenue.

Cowlady, you'll be interested to know that at one time I had a 'cow deflector' on my truck. I had to take it off cause I couldn't see where I was going.

hehe Raoul - you holding, or did you smoke it all?

Cowlady - they can aid in deflecting rocks, but that is somewhat dependent upon the size of the rock, and relative velocities. It all has to do with fluid dynamics, etc. (for some light reading, go to http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/fluiddyn - WAY over my head)

I'm with Raoul ... wait ... ... there, I feel better (the cow deflector...sheesh...).
Let's examing the flight trajectory of your everyday rock exiting the from the bottom of the semi in front of you.
It leaves the ground traveling, what? 65MPH? Arches up maybe 15'-20', then arches down on an unsuspecting "4wheeler".
I guess if I had a bug deflector that encased my entire truck I might be safe, but just an inch or so above my hoodline...naaa.

Truckluver..yeah the insurance covered the windshield, but, you have to have glass coverage...some insurance companies thou will cover you under the collison part for the glass cracks, etc.

Cowlady..check my signature out..have a bug deflector...ITS USELESS! does not stop rocks or even BUGS!

I've seen tourists up here that mount a frame with industrial strengh mesh that reaches higher than the windshield. Protects the grill too.

In Orlando there is a company who gives you a free box of steaks with your new windshield. Maybe there is something to this cow and windshield thing.

It is the law in Florida to get a new windshield if you have a crack in it so insurance pays for a new one.

Unhappy

I can't believe I let the guy talk me into a cow deflector in the first place. I mean, what are the odds? I thought it might cool to have something different on my truck but, 5x5 feet of plastic, three inches thick? When they asked if I wanted clear or smoke, like an idiot I opted for black. After two weeks I took it back and told the guy I was tired of driving from memory. I wanted it off so I could go somewhere new. Their policy was no refunds but, they swapped me even for a gamma ray cab protector.

That's one reason why I sold my truck I get boxed in my parking spot everyday! I spent 5 to 10 minuts just going one inch at a time trying to get out LOL! I removed my tailgate a few times to see better! It works wonders.

My push bar got in the way a few times but you get used to the extra nose area! Count to think of I was lucky to have a reg cab, short box truck LOL

Take care
